Donna Summer on the radio

COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘On The Radio’

The song, “On The Radio”, was originally recorded by Donna Summer in 1979

Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer herself wrote the fast-moving 1979 disco classic, “On The Radio”, as the title track of Donna’s best of compilation “On The Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II”. The song was released as a single in November 1979 and peaked at No.1 in Canada, No.5 in the US and No.32 in the UK. It was later featured on the soundtrack of the film ‘Foxes’, starring a young Jodie Foster, the following year.

British actress and singer Martine McCutcheon recorded a pop version of the song for her second studio album, “Wishing”, in 2000 and released it as the second single at the beginning of 2001. Her version hit No.5 in the UK, much higher than the original, and No.18 in Ireland, ironically, the same chart position Summer’s had done twenty two years previous!

But which version is the best? DONNA SUMMER’s original or MARTINE McCUTCHEON’s cover?
