The song, “Turn The Beat Around”, was originally recorded by Vicki Sue Robinson in 1976
Disco tune, “Turn The Beat Around”, was written by Gerald and Peter Jackson and recorded by Vicki Sue Robinson (1954-2000) for her debut album, “Never Gonna Let You Go”, in 1976. The track was released as the second single in February that year and became her breakout and only substantial hit reaching No.10 on the US singles chart and No.1 on the Dance/Disco chart. It was a mid-charting hit internationally making the top twenty in most countries except the UK, where it only got to No.51.
Laura Branigan (1952-2002) recorded her version for her self-titled 1990 album and released this to radio and clubs to promote the album. However, “Turn The Beat Around” would have much bigger exposure four years later when Gloria Estefan recorded her version for the soundtrack to the film, ‘The Specialist’. The song also featured on her 1994 covers album, “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” and peaked at No.13 in America and No.1 on the Club chart. It was also a big hit worldwide, this time reaching No.21 in the UK and No.8 in Australia.
But whose version is the best? VICKI SUE’s original or GLORIA’s cover?
