COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Never Tear Us Apart’

The song, “Never Tear Us Apart”, was originally recorded by INXS in 1987

Andrew Farriss (b.1959) and Michael Hutchence (1960-1997) of the Australian band INXS wrote the song “Never Tear Us Apart” for the group’s sixth studio album, “Kick”, in 1987. The track was released as the fourth single in the Spring of 1988. It peaked at No.11 in Australia, No.2 in Canada, No.24 in the UK and No.7 in America, where is became the fourth single from the album to reach the top ten.

The song has been covered a number of times. By Tom Jones and Australian actress and singer Natalie Imbruglia for Jones’ album “Reload” in 1999. It was mixed and sampled by British DJ and producer Paul Newman aka ‘Tall Paul’ in 2001 under the title of “Precious Heart”. This version reached No.14 on the UK singles chart and No.2 on the Dance chart as well as No.27 in Australia and No.6 on the US Club chart.

“Never Tear Us Apart” was re-recorded by INXS in 2010 with American singer Ben Harper and Canadian singer Mylène Farmer for the band’s album “Original Sin”, although this was not released as a single. In 2012, British singer Paloma Faith recorded her version of “Never Tear Us Apart” for her second studio album, “Fall To Grace”. It was released as the third single in September that year and reached No.16 on the UK singles chart.

But which version is the best? INXS’ original, TALL PAUL’s sample/remix or PALOMA’s cover?
