COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Gaudete’

The song, “Gaudete”, was originally recorded by ? in ?

“Gaudete” is a traditional folk Christmas carol that is thought to have been written in the 1580’s either in Sweden or Finland. How many times it has been performed since is unknown but the first recognised recording came in 1973 when British folk group Steeleye Span released their version in December that year. It became their first hit single making No.14 on the UK singles chart and thus becoming the first single to chart sung entirely in Latin.

Numerous other artists and bands have either recorded or performed the song since but the most noticeable came from British synth-pop duo Erasure in 2013 as part of their first Christmas album titled “Snow Globe”. “Gaudete” was released as the lead single in October and although not a commercial success, it has become something of a modern cult for the pair while the album itself peaked at No.49 in the UK and No.40 on the US Holiday chart.

But which version is the best? STELLEYE SPAN’s original or ERASURE’s cover?
