Carly Rae Jepsen at the O2 Institute, Birmingham, Saturday 11th February 2023
By Mark Keen
Wow, what a night! There’s still time to see Carly Rae Jepsen on tour, but you better hurry up. This was one of the best gigs I have been to for some time with an amazing atmosphere. The night did not get off to a great start as me and my mate turned up at the O2 Academy and were faced with a load of heavy metal fans we thought maybe we had the wrong night. We had the wrong venue! After finding the O2 Institute we arrived at a sold-out venue. It’s a great venue which feels really intimate. I don’t know what we were expecting, but the crowd was younger and much hipper than I imagined. I thought Carly Rae Jepsen was a bit of a hidden secret, but obviously not. It was an amazing crowd. There was a euphoric atmosphere and with a tight band Carly really gave an amazing show, supported by a couple of great backing singers.

The beauty of the show was that Carly has perfected the three-minute pop song and over 90 minutes managed to squeeze all her best songs in – “Your Type”, “Cut To The Feeling”, “Beach House“, “I Really Really Really Like You”, “Run Away With Me”, “The Loneliest Time” etc etc. 22 songs in total! She even managed to squeeze in my guilty pleasure, “Boy Problems”! We’ve all had a few of those! If you thought everyone was just waiting for “Call Me Maybe”, it was clear that the audience really, really, really liked the whole set, with plenty of singalong moments. With a few bursts of confetti, the atmosphere was electric and we all left happy. Carly and her band definitely put on an amazing performance, so get yourself to one of her gigs quick. It’s time everyone discovered Carly and her pop gems.
