The song, “Spinning Around”, was originally recorded by Kylie Minogue in 2000
“Spinning Around” is a song written by Ira Shickman, Osborne Bingham (b.1963), Kara DioGuardi (b.1970) and American singer Paula Abdul and was originally to have been recorded by Abdul for a planned album in 2000. Instead, it was given to Australian singer Kylie Minogue and released by her in June 2000 as the first track from her album “Light Years“. “Spinning Around” topped the UK and Australian singles charts and was a top ten hit across Europe and in New Zealand, where it became her biggest hit for a decade.
In 2023, the track was given a facelift by New Zealand DJ and producer Jolyon Petch with re-recorded vocals by British singer Lou LaBelle. The track is the latest cover by the producer who has previously tackled “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac, “Show Me Love” by Robin S and “Everybody’s Free” by Rozalla. The new “Spinning Around” topped the Australian Club chart for four weeks and went to No.3 in New Zealand, one place lower than the original by Kylie had peaked.
But which version is the best? KYLIE’s original or JOLYON’s cover?
