UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 20th June 1993

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 14th to Saturday 19th June 1993.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were eleven new entrys, six climbers and six non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. REM – “Everybody Hurts”
Eleven weeks on and REM manage to stay in the UK top 40 with their longest charting single here. It’s down ten places this week.

39. The The – “Love Is Stronger Than Death”
Our first new entry comes from The The this week with another track from their album “Dusk”. This one follows on from “Slow Motion Replay”.

38. Manic Street Preachers – “From Despair To Where”
The new Manic Street Preachers album is called “Gold Against The Soul” and it’s out tomorrow. Meanwhile the lead single drops in anticipation by thirteen places.

37. Blackstreet – “Baby Be Mine”
Time for a chart debut now and it’s a debut single from American trio Blackstreet that enters the UK top 40 and it also features in a new film called ‘CB4’.

36. Janet Jackson – “That’s The Way Love Goes”
Down thirteen places, that’s the way Janet Jackson goes with the lead single from her new album, which has been on the chart for two whole months now.

35. Neneh Cherry – “Buddy X”
Neneh Cherry got a new entry with this song last week but seven days later she can’t do anything at all with it and is a non-mover.

34. Billy Idol – “Shock To The System”
We welcome Billy Idol back to the UK top 40 this week with his first to make it this far since “Cradle Of Love” early in 1990.

33. SWV – “Weak”
Also back but much quicker are US girl trio SWV with the follow up to their debut “I’m So Into You”, just two months ago.

32. Joey Lawrence – “Nothin’ My Love Can’t Fix”
Keeping with The States and TV star Joey Lawrence launches his music career with this song which is also a new entry here this week.

31. Teenage Fanclub – “Radio”
While Scottish band Teenage Fanclub make a chart return a year on from their last single, “What You Do To Me”, which also peaked in this same spot!

30. House Of Pain – “Jump Around”
The re-issued single from House Of Pain from last year drops nine places this week, six weeks into it’s chart stay on this occasion.

29. Kingmaker – “Queen Jane”
Going the other way are Kingmaker with their new entry from last week, which moves into the top thirty, up four places.

28. 2 Unlimited – “Tribal Dance”
2 Unlimited have reached the two month mark with their latest, which leaves the upper half of the chart and goes down ten places.

27. George Michael, Lisa Stansfield and Queen – “Five Live” (EP)
The “Five Live” collection from George Michael, Lisa Stansfield and Queen, which is a former number one, goes down five places this week.

26. Jamiroquai – “Blow Your Mind”
While Jamiroquai sink thirteen with their latest single. Their debut album, “Emergency On Planet Earth”, is out now!

25. Sister Sledge – “Thinking Of You ’93”
Sister Sledge’s latest remix hit was last week’s highest climber, but a week later and it’s definitely not that as they go down eight places.

24. Niamh Kavanagh – “In Your Eyes”
The winner of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest was Niamh Kavanagh from Ireland and she brought the winning song to the chart last week and enjoys a climb of three places in her second.

23. Brian May and Cozy Powell – “Resurrection”
Going up further are Brian May and Cozy Powell with their collaboration, which is this week’s highest of nine places.

22. Tina Turner – “I Don’t Wanna Fight”
Six weeks in and Lulu’s song for Tina Turner has just left the top twenty as it falls seven places. The song will feature on the soundtrack album of the biopic to her life story that will be out in August.

21. Shabba Ranks and Queen Latifah – “What’cha Gonna Do?”
Shabba Ranks is back this week with something new as he joins up with Queen Latifah for this new entry while his track with Maxi Priest drops out.

20. The Time Frequency – “The Power Zone” (EP)
The Time Frequency got their first top twenty hit last week and here they stay for a second, but it’s in the same place as a non-mover.

19. Sting – “Fields Of Gold”
Sting was a new entry in the top twenty last week with the latest track from his current album and I bet he wishes he was a non-mover as the song goes down three places.

18. Louchie Lou and Michie One – “Shout (It Out)”
Going down six places is the debut single from Louchie Lou and Michie One as the girls make it a fifth week inside the top twenty.

17. Sade – “No Ordinary Love”
Sade drop back three places with their re-release from last year, which was the lead single from their latest album, “Love Deluxe”.

16. East 17 – “West End Girls”
East 17 come back again for another try for a top ten hit. This is a cover of the Pet Shop Boys breakout hit from 1985-86, which went to No.1. Can the boys from Walthamstow take it back there…?

15. Terence Trent D’Arby and Des’ree – “Delicate”
It’s a good week for Terence Trent D’Arby and Des’ree as their duet climbs four places. The song comes fro Terence’s new album called “Symphony Or Damn”.

14. Pet Shop Boys – “Can You Forgive Her?”
Here come the pair responsible for the song at No.16, Chris and Neil of the Pet Shop Boys. Their brand new tune falls seven places from number seven, where it’s been for the last two weeks.

13. Snap – “Do You See The Light?”
While Snap fall two this week with their brand new track, three weeks in, which features the vocals of Niki Harris, who was also the singer on their last hit “Exterminate”.

12. Green Jelly – “Three Little Pigs”
One month later and Green Jelly’s debut UK top 40 hit exits the top ten, down just three places for them. The boys from Buffalo, NY got together in 1981!

11. Gloria Gaynor – “I Will Survive ’93”
It’s been a decade since Gloria Gaynor was last in the UK top 40 with “I Am What I Am”. Now she’s back with her best known tune, remixed for 1993 and fifteen years on from when it went to No.1 back in 1978.

10. Inner Circle – “Sweat (A La La La La Long)”
Inner Circle stay top ten for another week with their sweaty hit single, which is down just two places in its la la la la long stay with us!

9. M People – “One Night In Heaven”
We welcome back M People this week with brand new music and a new album on the way. This is their second top ten hit in a row following the remixed “How Can I Love You More?” back in January.

8. Lisa Stansfield – “In All The Right Places”
Lisa Stansfield is in all the right places this week as she goes back up the chart, one place higher from where she fell to this time last week with her contribution to the film ‘Indecent Proposal’.

7. Rod Stewart – “Have I Told You Lately…?”
Rod Stewart gets a huge new entry this week with a new live version of a Van Morrison song from 1989 which Rod recorded for his recent Unplugged session for MTV and it is also this weeks highest!

6. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Tease Me”
The first UK chart hit for Chaka Demus and Pliers pauses outside the top five for a second week running as they fail to tease us any further.

5. The Spin Doctors – “Two Princes”
And that also goes for the two princes themselves, The Spin Doctors, as their latest is also a non-mover for a second week in a row.

4. Ace Of Base – “All That She Wants”
And the non-movers keep coming, the former number one from Ace Of Base also stops and pauses for a second week, now two months on from their original entry.

3. Haddaway – “What Is Love?”
AND Haddaway also has to ask “what is love?” for a second week in third place as he too suffers a non-mover with his very first UK top 40 showing.

2. UB40 – “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You”
There is, however, movement above, as the number one from the last two weeks from UB40 does do something and it’s to drop down one place and off the top!

1. Gabrielle – “Dreams”
Which means last week’s highest new entry from Gabrielle goes up one place to take the number one spot this week as the 23 year old celebrates her debut single becoming the biggest seller of all! But can she keep it, or will one of the non-movers jump up and jump in? There’s only one way to find out…
