WHERE ARE THEY NOW? BlackGirl

BlackGirl were 90’s girls for the 1990’s. But did it all end there…?

US trio BlackGirl formed in 1992 with Pam Copeland, Nycolia “Tye-V” Turman and Rochelle Stuart as the three young ladies ready to follow in the footsteps of SWV and Jade. But it wasn’t until 1994 that they were signed to RCA Records and released their debut single, “Krazy”. The track made No.91 on the singles chart and was followed by their album, “Treat U Right”, which had been recorded with noted producers such as Teddy Riley and Tricky Stewart and Sean Hall. The album never made the US top 200 but made a small dent on the R&B chart and would go on to sell 100,000 copies there.

BlackGirl fared much better with the follow up, “90’s Girl”, which perhaps would become their anthem. The song, released in the Summer of 1994, made it to No.71 this time and also debuted the girls at No.23 on the UK singles chart. “90’s Girl” became their biggest on the R&B chart, where it peaked at No.13. They followed this with the ballad “Where Did We Go Wrong?”, but this missed the top 100. BlackGirl would achieve no further hits internationally but did register two further singles on the R&B chart, “Let’s Do it Again” and “Freedom”, both in 1995, and although they toured with R Kelly, they called it quits in 1996. Rochelle Stuart recorded solo material for the rest of the 90’s.

After working on their own projects for some years, BlackGirl regrouped in 2016 and made a number of performances as well as re-recording a new version of “Where Did We Go Wrong?”. They still pop up from time to time reliving they days as 90’s girls in the 90’s world, wishing perhaps that it was still the 90’s and they really were THE 90’s girls!
