COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’

The song, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, was originally recorded by Elton John and Kiki Dee in 1976

Bernie Taupin (b.1950) and Sir Elton John wrote the song “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, which Elton recorded with singer Kiki Dee in 1976. It was released in June that year and proved a huge success, topping the UK and US singles charts and in a futher eight countries worldwide. “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” has sold over a million copies on both sides of the Atlantic becoming his first UK chart topper and his fifth in America.

In 1993, Elton re-recorded the song with ‘supermodel’ and entertainer RuPaul (born RuPaul Andre Charles in 1960) for his “Duets” album, that also featured a new version of “True Love” with Kiki Dee. Their “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, produced by the legendary Giorgio Moroder, was released as the third single in February 1994 and went to No.7 in the UK and No.92 Stateside, whilst being a mid-charting hit in most other territories. It topped the chart in Iceland, however!

But which version is the best? ELTON and KIKI’s or ELTON and RuPAUL’s?
