UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 4th July 1993
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 28th June to Saturday 3rd July 1993.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, thirty years ago, there were twelve new entrys, five climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Urban Cookie Collective – “The Key, The Secret” We kick off with a new entry and some chart newcomers with British dance act Urban Cookie Collective getting their first top 40 showing with their debut single.
39. Pet Shop Boys – “Can You Forgive Her?” The Pet Shop Boys survive a fifth week on the chart with their brand new single, which drops eleven places. The duo are still putting the finishing touches to their next album.
38. Soul Asylum – “Runaway Train” American band Soul Asylum return to the UK top 40 this week with the follow up to “Someone To Shove”. The track comes from their sixth studio album, “Grave Dancers Union”.
37. David Morales and The Bad Yard Club – “Gimme Luv” Producer David Morales joins up with The Bad Yard Club for our next new entry, which sees David debut as an artist and not as a writer and producer as he has been up till now.
36. Sting – “Fields Of Gold” Sting is down ten places this week with the latest track from “Ten Summnors Tales”. This one makes it a month on the top 40.
35. US3 featuring Tukka Yoot – “Riddim” British band US3 make their top 40 debut this week with their second single that features singer Robert Taylor under the name of ‘Tukka Yoot’.
34. Blur – “Chemical World” Blur’s latest drops back two places in week two, which is also the second single to come from their second album, “Modern Life Is Rubbish”.
33. Alexander O’Neal – “In The Middle” Falling one is that latest offering from Alexander O’Neal. His latest album is his fifth since his self-titled debut back in 1985.
32. Sade – “No Ordinary Love” Sade are down eleven this week with the re-issue of their single from last year, which clocks up three times the length of stay than it did last September!
31. Jesus Jones – “Zeroes And Ones” Jesus Jones get a new entry this week with another track from their latest album “Perverse”. This follows “The Devil You Know” and “The Right Decision”.
30. The Jesus and Mary Chain – “Sound Of Speed” (EP) The Jesus and Mary Chain come back to the top 40 this week, this time with an extended play of tracks that is their sixth to date.
29. Usura – “Sweat” Producer Usura return with this new entry and the follow up to their big top ten debut in January with “Open Your Mind”.
28. Deborah Harry – “I Can See Clearly” The newest release from Blondie’s Deborah Harry falls five places in its second week with us. Debbie will release he next album in just under two months time.
27. Snap – “Do You See The Light?” Snap take a big drop this week of twelve places and out of the top twenty, where their latest had been for the past four weeks.
26. Kenny Thomas – “Stay” We welcome Kenny Thomas back to the top 40 and with brand new music! This is the first taste of his upcoming second album which follows 1991’s “Voices”.
25. Green Jelly – “Three Little Pigs” The boys from Green Jelly go down seven this week as they exit the UK top twenty with their very first big hit single here.
24. Terence Trent D’Arby and Des’ree – “Delicate” As do Terence Trent D’Arby and Des’ree, who delicately fall ten places with their duet and the second single from his new album.
23. AC/DC – “Big Gun” Veteran Australian rockers AC/DC are back with this new entry, which comes from the soundtrack of a new film starring Arold Schwarzenegger called ‘Last Action Hero’.
22. New Order – “Ruined In A Day” New Order are anything but ruined in a day but one week on and their latest fails to do anything at all and is a non-mover.
21. The Time Frequency – “The Power Zone” (EP) Time is up for The Time Frequency’s latest EP, which just slips out of the upper half of the chart and down four places.
20. Evolution – “Everybody Dance” Deconstruction Records Dance act Evolution scored their first top twenty hit last week and remain so a week on, but down one place.
19. Inner Circle – “Sweat (A La La La La Long)” Inner Circle fall seven places this week as they stay top twenty, having been on the chart for three months now with this.
18. Taylor Dayne – “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love” Having scored her first UK chart hit in five years last week, Taylor Dayne climbs seven places with her cover of the Barry White song in her second.
17. East 17 – “West End Girls” No top ten hit this time for East 17 and even with a cover of the Pet Shop Boys very first number one, which falls six places.
16. Kim Wilde – “If I Can’t Have You” Kim Wilde gets a big new entry this week and it’s another cover. This time a Bee Gees hit from 1977 from the ‘Saturday Night Fever’ soundtrack.
15. Lisa Stansfield – “In All The Right Places” Lisa Stansfield leaves the top ten this week, down five places with her contribution to the ‘Indecent Proposal’ soundtrack.
14. Jade – “I Wanna Love You” And dropping down one place is last week’s highest new entry from Jade with the follow up to the debut top ten hit “Don’t Walk Away”.
13. Joey Lawrence – “Nothin’ My Love Can’t Fix” Meanwhile, last week’s highest climber from fellow American Joey Lawrence goes up three. The song made the top twenty back home earlier this year.
12. The Levellers – “Belaruse” The Levellers come back with a second top twenty new entry this week. This is the first new song to come from their third studio album, due out in a few months time.
11. Michael Jackson – “Will You Be There?” Michael Jackson released his last album over a year and a half ago and he’s still releasing singles from it! This is number eight and it’s also this week’s highest!
10. Ace Of Base – “All That She Wants” Ace Of Base make it a tenth week on the chart and they drop one place to number ten with their former chart topper.
9. The Spin Doctors – “Two Princes” And The Spin Doctors do the same. Their ninth week on the chart sees them fall one place to number nine!
8. 4 Non Blondes – “What’s Up?” American band 4 Non Blondes burst onto the UK chart for the first time last week and they will not be asking what’s up seven days on as the song shoots up twelve places to be this weeks highest climber!
7. M People – “One Night In Heaven” M People spent one night in heaven in their highest chart position yet, but a second night and week in the same place.
6. Rod Stewart – “Have I Told You Lately?” Rod Stewart’s latest cover version, this one from his recent MTV Unplugged session. slips out of the top five and down one place.
5. Gloria Gaynor – “I Will Survive ’93” Swapping places with Rod is Gloria Gaynor with the remix of her biggest hit, which moves up one place. The song went to No.1 in 1978, can she do it again…?
4. UB40 – “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” UB40 drop another single place this week with their former number one, now with two months on the chart with their take on the Elvis song from the current film ‘Sliver’.
3. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Tease Me” Five weeks in and Chaka Demus and Pliers are still climbing the UK singles chart. This week finds them one place higher than they were.
2. Haddaway – “What Is Love?” Haddaway has to make do with a second week in second place as his first hit single here stalls just one shy of the top spot.
1. Gabrielle – “Dreams” …that goes to Gabrielle once again as she claims a third week at number one with her debut single. Can she make it a fourth, or will Chaka Demus and Pliers, Gloria Gaynor or someone else put a stop to that? There’s only one way to find out…
