FRESH: Dina Carroll – The Jive Years

Digital release of Dina Carroll singles from 1989!

Nearly 35 years after they were originally released, Dina Carroll‘s singles with Jive Records are finally available on Spotify to stream and play! Back in 1989, Dina Carroll was a virtual unknown, having joined the group Masquerade in the mid-80’s and recorded the single “Set It Off”, Dina was plucked from the ensemble as a future star by Jive and signed in 1988.

She recorded and released the singles “People All Around The World”, “We Are One” and her souped-up version of Dionne Warwick’s classic “Walk On By“, but all of them failed to chart, surprisingly, and Dina was consigned to the bargain bin for 50p. That could have been that, but Dina did not go unnoiticed again and it was producers Dave Rawlings and Ronnie Herel that picked her up for their upcoming project called Quartz.

Quartz ‘introducing Dina Carroll’ broke the UK top ten in early 1991 with their cover of Carol King’s “It’s Too Late” and Dina was at last a star. The rest is of course history. Her multi million selling debut album came in 1993 and it was followed by the Platinum certified “Only Human” in 1996. Dina has been lying low since 2001 only resurfacing in 2016 as guest vocalist on The Dig Band’s “We Bring The Party”.

Back in 1989, everyone at Jive had hopes of launching a British Whitney Houston, with Dina’s powerful, unmistakable voice together with a late 80’s Dance/Soul sound, equally adept at loud uptempo numbers as well as tender ballads. But for some reason, the marketing budget did not stretch very far and the music buying public took no interest. It would be another three years before they finally did with her first chart hit single with “Ain’t No Man” in the Summer of 1992.

For now, enjoy some early Dina and what could have been the beginning of her career as a singing star. Dina is greatly missed from the music scene today and it seems as if we shall never hear her voice again in the studio or on stage. If you’re reading this Dina, don’t be a stranger.
