The song, “Kiss”, was originally recorded by Prince in 1985
Prince himself wrote, produced and recorded the song “Kiss” for his 1985 album “Parade”. The song was released as the lead single in February 1986 and it went to No.1 in America and was a top ten hit in over twenty other countries including the UK, where it peaked at No.6. “Kiss” has recharted on several occasions, most recently in 2016, the year of the artists death. It has sold over one million copies on both sides of the Atlantic.
British band Age Of Chance covered the song later in 1986 and took it to No.50 and No.35 on the US Club chart in 1987, however, the best known version of “Kiss” comes from British production team Art Of Noise and their guest singer (Sir) Tom Jones. The unlikely partnership resulted in a huge top five hit in October 1988 for the song and a top ten placing across Europe and ‘down under’. Their version made it to No.31 in America and No.18 on the Club chart.
But which version is the best? PRINCE’s original or ART OF NOISE/TOM JONES’ cover?
