UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 18th July 1993
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 12th to Saturday 17th July 1993.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, thirty years ago, there were eight new entrys, nine climbers and six non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Soul Asylum – “Runaway Train” American band Soul Asylum fall three places in their third week on the UK top 40 with the third single from their album “Grave Dancers Union”.
39. Squeeze – “Third Rail” It’s been six years since Squeeze last had a top 40 charting single, but they come back with this week’s first new entry and with the lead single from a new album they have coming out.
38. Inner Circle – “Sweat (A La La La La Long)” Meanwhile Inner Circle drop fifteen places with their long, sweaty chart hit, over three months on from when they first turned up.
37. Blur – “Chemical World” Time is up for Blur with their latest offering as it falls nine places, just three weeks on for them with the follow up to “For Tomorrow”.

35. The Levellers – “Belaruse” Departing the top twenty are The Levellers as they slide sixteen places with their second single to make it to that part of the chart.
34. US3 featuring Tukka Yoot – “Riddim” There’s good news for US3 and Tukka Yoot as they get a climb once again, this week finds them two places higher than they were.
33. N-Joi – “The Drumstick” (EP) N-Joi hit back with a new entry and another EP of tracks. This is their first on the top 40 for 1993 and their third EP overall.
32. Deacon Blue – “Hang Your Head” The fourth single from Deacon Blue’s latest album made the top 40 last week, but like it’s three predecessors, it hasn’t made the top twenty and goes down eleven a week on.
31. Time Frequency – “The Power Zone” (EP) Time Frequency stick around for a seventh week with their best seller so far. Their latest EP actually rebounds and goes back up the chart by one place!
30. Jon Secada – “Do You Really Want Me?” It would seem that we do really want Jon Secada as his new entry from last week goes up three places to give him a fourth top thirty hit here.
29. The Waterboys – “Glastonbury Song” The Waterboys return this week with a new entry, the second to come from their latest album, “Dream Harder” and the follow up to “The Return Of Pan”.
28. Jade – “I Wanna Love You” Jade continue their descent of the UK singles chart. Week four finds them down eight places and out of the top twenty.
27. REM – “Nightswimming” Following their epic time in the chart with “Everybody Hurts” this Spring, REM come back with the follow up and this new entry.

14. Craig McLachlan and Debbie Gibson – “You’re The One That I Want” The current stage production of Grease stars Craig McLachlan and Debbie Gibson and one of the best known songs from that production gives them both a big new entry, Craig’s first of 1993 and Debbie’s first here since 1989!
13. Rod Stewart – “Have I Told You Lately?” Rod Stewart exits the top ten with this cover of a Van Morrison song, which slips three places after four weeks inside.
12. Kim Wilde – “If I Can’t Have You” It’s covers all the way and Kim Wilde is up next with her version of the Bee Gees 1977 song, which is a non-mover this week.

10. UB40 – “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” Here comes the sixth cover version in a row, this time it’s the former number one from UB40 and their take on Elvis’ old song, which falls two places and now with ten weeks on the chart.

6. M People – “One Night In Heaven” The latest from M People moved up one to be within sight of the top five this time last week, but that is where they will have to stay for a second.
5. Haddaway – “What Is Love?” Haddaway still asks the question, eight weeks on the chart now, seven in the top ten and still top five but down two places.
4. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Tease Me” Holding on to fourth place having dropped back one last week are Chaka Demus and Pliers with their debut hit, which has been to ten for six weeks.
3. Gabrielle – “Dreams” Gabrielle made way for a new number one last week and she makes way for a new number two seven days on with a drop of one place with her former chart topper.
2. 4 Non Blondes – “What’s Up?” That will be the 4 Non Blondes as they go up three places, but can they go up any further and take their debut UK chart hit to the top…?
1. Take That – “Pray” …Not for this week as it’s last week’s highest new entry from Take That that stays on top for a second week as the biggest seller of all. But can they make it three in a row, or will 4 Non Blondes or someone else take it from them? There’s only one way to find out…
