UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 25th July 1993
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 19th to Saturday 24th July 1993.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, thirty years ago, there were thirteen new entrys, four climbers and four non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Stan – “Suntan” Stan is the name for a new pop duo of Simon Andrew and Kevin Stagg, who have just released their debut single and here it is a new entry this week!
39. Lisa Stansfield – “In All The Right Places” Lisa Stansfield has been in all the right places for nine weeks with her contribution to the ‘Indecent Proposal’ soundtrack. She’s on her way out with a drop of eighteen places.
38. N-Joi – “The Drumstick” (EP) The new collection from N-Joi arrived this time last week but seven days on finds them falling as well, down five places.
37. Kenny Thomas – “Stay” And Kenny Thomas does anything but stay in the chart with his brand new song. Having been a non-mover for the past two weeks, he falls fifteen.
36. US3 featuring Tukka Yoot – “Riddim” US3 and Tukka Yoot slip two places with their collaboration. The song has been in the top 40 for exactly one month.
35. Yazz and Aswad – “How Long?” We welcome back Yazz to the top 40 having been away for a very long time and she brings with her Aswad, who have also been away for an equally long time for this version of Ace’s 1975 top twenty hit.
34. Paul Weller – “Sunflower” Former Style Council member Paul Weller drops fifteen places with the lead single from his next album, which is due out this Autumn.
33. OMD – “Dream Of Me” Also falling is last week’s highest climber from OMD, which goes back the other way and down nine places after three weeks on.
32. Cypress Hill – “Insane In The Brain” American rap/hip hop group Cypress Hill formed in 1991 and have released six singles since then, but this is their first to land on the UK top 40 and it’s also the lead single from their second, upcoming studio album.
31. Bitty Mclean – “It Keeps Raining” There’s another chart newcomer next and it’s from British singer Bitty Mclean with his debut single, a cover of a Fat Domino song from 1961, which gives Bitty a new entry.
30. Juliet Roberts – “Caught In The Middle” Juliet Roberts returns to the top 40 with the follow up to “Free Love”, which she took to the top thirty last year. Can she improve on that with this new entry?
29. D:Ream – “Unforgiven” It’s three in a row for D:Ream as they comeback with a new entry and their third top 40 single in a row to make it. This is the follow up to “U R The Best Thing”.
28. REM – “Nightswimming” Having achieved a huge chart hit with their last single, REM play things down with the follow up, which drops down one place from last week’s entry.
27. Taylor Dayne – “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love” Leaving the top twenty this week is Taylor Dayne with her cover of the Barry White song, which is down twelve places.
26. Ace Of Base – “All That She Wants” And following her is the former number one from Ace Of Base, which departs after three months in the upper half of the chart and down eight places.
25. The Spin Doctors – “Two Princes” Three months on and The Spin Doctors are still with us with their biggest hit here. This week they too leave the top twenty, down nine.
24. Rod Stewart – “Have I Told You Lately?” Making way for some fresh blood in the top twenty too is Rod Stewart with his latest top five hit, which slides eleven places.
23. Janet Jackson – “If” Janet Jackson comes back with a new entry and the second single to come from her brand new album, simply called “Janet”.
22. Manic Street Preachers – “La Tristesse Durera” And there’s a new entry for the Manic Street Preachers with the second single to come from their latest album, “Gold Against The Soul”.
21. Billy Joel – “The River Of Dreams” Billy Joel makes a return to the UK top 40 for 1993 with a new album on the way. This is his first showing here since his cover of Elvis’ “All Shook Up” last year.
20. Whitney Houston – “Run To You” Whitney is back with a new entry and the fourth song to come from the soundtrack of ‘The Bodyguard’, which is also the fourth to make it to the UK top twenty.
19. Shara Nelson – “Down That Road” Former Massive Attack singer Shara Nelson made her solo debut last week with this song and she moves into the top twenty this week with a climb of four places.
18. Oui3 – “Break From The Old Routine” Oui3 break from their routine of climbing with their latest and drop back one place with their first to make it this far.
17. Michael Jackson – “Will You Be There?” Having been a non-mover for the past two weeks, Michael Jackson leaves the top ten with the eighth single from his “Dangerous” album, which falls eight places.
16. Kim Wilde – “If I Can’t Have You” Kim Wilde was also a non-mover last week with her cover of this Bee Gees song, which has been her highest charting hit since 1988, but goes down four places.
15. Gloria Gaynor – “I Will Survive ’93” The 1993 remix of Gloria Gaynor’s 1977 number one has been around for six weeks now, all of them in the top twenty and that’s where she stays, but down seven places.
14. UB40 – “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” UB40 leave the top ten this week, where they’ve been for ten weeks with this former number one, which falls four places.
13. Craig McLachlan and Debbie Gibson – “You’re The One That I Want” Chart stars and now stage stars Craig McLachlan and Debbie Gibson go up one with their take on the John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John number from ‘Grease’.
12. Robin S – “Luv 4 Luv” Robin S gets a big new entry this week with the follow up to her massive Dance hit “Show Me Love” earlier this year.
11. Urban Cookie Collective – “The Key, The Secret” While four weeks on and the Urban Cookie Collective are still climbing. This week they are the highest of all, going up nine places.
10. Dannii Minogue – “This Is It” Dannii Minogue moves up one this week and in doing so she makes her return to the UK top ten, her first appearance since “Jump To The Beat” in 1991.
9. M People – “One Night In Heaven” M People have spent more than one week in the top ten with this song. Six in fact, but they leave the number six spot they have held for the past two weeks and fall three places.
8. Roxette – “Almost Unreal” Also going down is last week’s highest new entry from Roxette. Their contribution to the soundtrack of ‘Super Mario Bros.’ slips one place in week two.
7. Madonna – “Rain” Taking their place this week is Madonna with a big new entry and the fifth single to come from her “Erotica” album, which also makes five out of five UK top ten hits from that album.
6. Haddaway – “What Is Love?” Haddaway just slips out of the top five where he’s been with this song for the past seven weeks, and down one place.
5. Freddie Mercury – “Living On My Own” Our highest new entry this week comes from the late Freddie Mercury with a remix of a song he originally recorded back in 1985 and only took to No.50 then. Thanks to a remix by No More Brothers, the song returns much higher this time.
4. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Tease Me” There’s no change for Chaka Demus and Pliers this week. Their first UK hit, remains in the same spot for a second week, two months after their arrival.
3. Gabrielle – “Dreams” And there’s no change for the former number one from Gabrielle, who also sticks in third place for a second week with her debut single.
2. 4 Non Blondes – “What’s Up?” And that also goes for the 4 Non Blondes with their first UK chart hit, which is a non-mover for a second week in second place.
1. Take That – “Pray” Which means there is no change at the top for Take That as they get a third week in pole position as the biggest seller of all. Can they make it a whole month, or will someone below break out and put an end to their time at the top? There’ only one way to find out…
