UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 1st August 1993
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 26th to Saturday 31st July 1993.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, thirty years ago, there were eight new entrys, nine climbers and five non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Ice Cube – “Check Yo Self” We begin this week with a new entry from American rapper Ice Cube, who we last saw here in the UK earlier this year with “It Was A Good Day”.
39. Cypress Hill – “Insane In The Brain” Meanwhile, fellow Americans Cypress Hill fall seven places with their very first UK top 40 single, only a week after their arrival.
38. Secret Life – “Love So Strong” Andy Throup, Charlton Antenbring, Jim Di Salvo and Paul Bryant make up Secret Life and today they land their very first UK top 40 hit with this new entry.
37. Taylor Dayne – “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love” Taylor Dayne‘s version of Barry White’s first number one hit has been about for six weeks now but she is down ten places.
36. Ali and Frazier – “Uptown Top Ranking” We welcome Ali and Frazier to the chart for the first time this week with their debut single, which gets them here with no fuss at all.
35. The Spin Doctors – “Two Princes” The Spin Doctors haven’t done bad with this single. Twelve weeks on and they are still here, but only just as it drops ten places.
34. Yazz and Aswad – “How Long?” Spending a second week on the chart are Yazz and Aswad with their version of this track, which goes up just one place.
33. D:Ream – “Unforgiven” No such luck this time for D:Ream‘s new entry of last week, which goes down four places. Never mind, things can only get better…!
32. Rod Stewart – “Have I Told You Lately?” Seven weeks on and Rod Stewart hangs in there with his successful version of an old Van Morrison number. This week he goes down eight.
31. Daniel O’Donnell – “What Ever Happened To Old Fashioned Love?” Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell comes back to the UK top 40 this week with a new entry. This is his second since “I Just Want To Dance With You” almost a year ago.
30. Ace Of Base – “All That She Wants” Fourteen weeks now for former chart toppers Ace Of Base with their very first hit here and the song is still top thirty, but down four places.
29. Goodmen – “Give It Up” The Goodmen are Dutch duo Chocolate Puma aka Gaston Steenskist and René ter Horst and this is their first appearance on the UK singles chart in whatever form. Welcome!
28. Oui3 – “Break From The Old Routine” Oui3 get a fourth week on the chart with their highest peaking so far. This week they leave the top twenty, down ten places.
27. Manic Street Preachers – “La Tristesse Durera” The newest release from the Manic Street Preachers falls five places in its second week on the chart. No single from their new album has yet made it to the top twenty.
26. Juliet Roberts – “Caught In The Middle” There is, however, good news for Juliet Roberts‘ new entry of last week, which goes the other way and is four places higher than it was.
25. Gloria Gaynor – “I Will Survive ’93” The 1993 remix of Gloria Gaynor’s former chart topper leaves the upper half of the chart this week, down ten places.
24. Culture Beat – “Mr. Vain” In a week of newcomers, we welcome German group Culture Beat for the first time with their fifth single to come out but their first to get this far.
23. Michael Jackson – “Will You Be There?” …asks Michael Jackson with his latest offering from his “Dangerous” album of 1991. The song drops six places this week.
22. Kim Wilde – “If I Can’t Have You” Also departing the top twenty is Kim Wilde with her biggest hit for five years, this cover of a Bee Gees number, which is down six.
21. Bon Jovi – “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” Getting a new entry are Bon Jovi with the third single to come from their most recent album, “Keep The Faith”. This is the follow up to “Bed Of Roses”.
20. Shara Nelson – “Down That Road” Former Massive Attack singer Shara Nelson goes down her road with her debut solo single, but also goes down one place with it this week!
19. Bitty Mclean – “It Keep Raining” Chart newcomer Bitty Mclean arrived last week with his umbrella up for this song and a week later he’s enjoying the rain much more with the highest climber of thirteen places!
18. UB40 – “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” The former number one from UB40 celebrates three months on the top 40 this week and still top twenty but down four places.
17. Michelle Gayle – “Looking Up” Our highest new entry this week is the debut single from former Grange Hill pupil and now Eastenders actress Michelle Gayle, who make the transition from the TV ratings to the music chart!
16. Craig McLachlen and Debbie Gibson – “You’re The One That I Want” Grease stage stars Craig McLachlen and Debbie Gibson fail to take their version of this song to the top ten and go down three places.
15. Whitney Houston – “Run To You” And it looks as if Whitney Houston won’t be running to the top ten for a fourth time with her latest from ‘The Bodyguard’, which climbs five places in its second week.
14. Janet Jackson – “If” Going further in weeks two is the second single from Janet Jackson‘s new album, which moves into the top twenty, up nine places.
13. M People – “One Night In Heaven” M People have spent six nights or weeks in the top ten with their biggest hit yet, but weeks seven sees them leaves, down four places.
12. Billy Joel – “The River Of Dreams” Returning to the UK top twenty for the first time since October 1989 is Billy Joel with his breand new single, which goes up nine places.
11. Robin S – “Luv 4 Luv” And another of last week’s new entries from Robin S goes up just one place in her second week, hoping for a top ten climb in seven days from now.
10. Dannii Minogue – “This Is It” This is it for now for Dannii Minogue as her first top ten hit in two years stalls and goes no further for a second week running.
9. Haddaway – “What Is Love?” Haddaway reaches ten weeks on the UK chart with his debut single and it remains top ten, two months on, but three places lower.
8. Roxette – “Almost Unreal” Roxette probably think it’s almost unreal that they are still top ten here. Their latest offering gets a non-mover, having dropped one place from their entry position last week.
7. Madonna – “Rain” There’s also a non-mover for Madonna with her new entry from last week. The song is co-written with Shep Pettibone, with whom she worked on most of last years album “Erotica”.
6. Urban Cookie Collective – “The Key, The Secret” Five weeks on and the Urban Cookie Collective are still climbing from the very bottom of the top 40. Last week they were the highest climbers for the second time and this week sees them move into the top ten, up five places.
5. Gabrielle – “Dreams” Gabrielle is on the move again, still going down, but still top five and two places down on where she was. The song is now two months on the chart.
4. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Tease Me” Chaka Demus and Pliers have been top five for two months also with their first hit here and things are not going too badly for them as they get a non-mover this week.
3. 4 Non Blondes – “What’s Up?” Having propped up the number one single for the past two weeks, the 4 Non Blondes drop back one to make way for someone else.
2. Freddie Mercury – “Living On My Own” …that person being Freddie Mercury with the remix of his 1986 song, which was last week’s highest new entry, and it goes up three in week two, to number two.
1. Take That – “Pray” Take That, however, remain the biggest seller of all, four weeks now on top with their very first chart topper. But can they take it to five, or will Freddie or perhaps the Urban Cookie Collective will find the key to another place? This place. There’s only one way to find out…
