UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 8th August 1993
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 2nd to Saturday 7th August 1993.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, thirty years ago, there were eight new entrys, fourteen climbers and NO non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Gloria Estefan – “If We Were Lovers” We start with a new entry this week from Gloria Estefan and the second single to come from her current album, “Mi Tierra”, which is actually titled “Con Los Anos Que Me Quedan”!
39. Blackbox – “Rockin’ To The Music” It’s been some time since we last saw Blackbox on the chart, but they are back this week with a new entry, four years after they topped the chart with “Ride On Time”.
38. The Beloved – “Outerspace Girl” Coming back with another helping from this year’s “Conscience” album are The Beloved. This becomes the third top 40 charting single from that album.
37. Manic Street Preachers – “La Tristesse Durera” Managing to hold on for a third week with their latest are the Manic Street Preachers, who go down ten places with this songs which translates to “Scream To A Sigh”.
36. Ice Cube – “Check Yoself” Rapper Ice Cube goes up four in his second week with us with his second single to make the UK top 40. This one features fellow rapper Das Efx.
35. Gloria Gaynor – “I Will Survive ’93” Gloria Gaynor will survive another week in the top 40 with the remix of her former number one, which falls ten places.
34. Michael Jackson – “Will You Be There?” Going down eleven places is Michael Jackson with his latest. His “Dangerous” album has now sold over 1.2 million copies here.
33. Ali and Frazier – “Uptown Top Ranking” Ali and Frazier arrived on the chart last week for the first time with this song and they go up three places in their second.
32. Jamiroquai – “Emergency On Planet Earth” Jamiroquai blow your mind and get a new entry this week with the title track of their debut album, which came out in June.
31. Yazz and Aswad – “How Long?” Continued good news for Yazz and Aswad as their version of this old song goes up again, this week three more places.
30. Hulk Hogan and Green Jelly – “Anarchy In The UK” Green Jelly are back with a new entry and this time they are joined by American wrestler Hulk Hogan for their take on the Sex Pistols song from 1976.
29. Shara Nelson – “Down That Road” Shara Nelson continues to go down that road and down nine places this week with her debut solo single. Expect her album next month.
28. The Spin Doctors – “Two Princes” In a surprise move, The Spin Doctors get another week in the UK top 40 and not only that, they go back up the chart seven places!
27. UB40 – “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” Meanwhile, the former number one form UB40 departs the top twenty, down nine this week, which is their thirteenth week on the chart.
26. Craig McLachlan and Debbie Gibson – “You’re The One That I Want” Following them are Craig McLachlan and Debbie Gibson with their version of the John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John song, which falls ten places.
25. Whitney Houston – “Run To You” Whitney Houston runs too, down ten as well with her latest cut from ‘The Bodyguard’ soundtrack, which has now sold over a million copies here.
24. Juliet Roberts – “Caught In The Middle” Singer Juliet Roberts continues to move up and towards the middle of the chart, this week she goes up two places which is now her highest charting.
23. The Goodmen – “Give It Up” The Goodmen made their UK chart debut last week with this track and they make a move of six places in their second week.
22. Bad Boys Inc. – “Don’t Talk About Love” Get ready for some competition Take That as we welcome a new boy band this week to the top 40 in the shape of Bad Boys Inc. with their debut single!
21. Daniel O’Donnell – “What Ever Happened To Good Old Fashioned Love?” Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell enjoys a good second week as he goes up ten places, one away from his previous chart high here only a year ago.
20. Sarah Washington – “I Will Always Love You” You’ve heard Dolly do it and Whitney, now we have the dance version of last year’s biggest seller from British singer Sarah Washington with her first top 40 single. Now, can she take this to number one…?
19. M People – “One Night In Heaven” M People have now spent eight weeks in heaven in the UK top twenty with their biggest seller yet. This week finds them down six places.
18. Janet Jackson – “If” Going down four is the latest from Janet Jackson, after she returned to the UK top twenty this time last week with the follow up to “That’s The Way Love Goes”.
17. Bon Jovi – “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” Coming back to the UK top twenty are Bon Jovi with the latest from their “Keep The Faith” album, which goes up four places.
16. Haddaway – “What Is Love?” Down seven and out of the top ten comes Haddaway with his hugely successful debut chart hit, now eleven weeks in and still going strong.
15. Dannii Minogue – “This Is It” This is it for Dannii Minogue and her latest chart effort, which departs the top ten, down five places, having been a non-mover for the past two weeks.
14. Robin S – “Luv 4 Luv” And just missing out on a second top ten hit here is Robin S as the follow up to “Show Me Love” drops back three places.
13. Roxette – “Almost Unreal” Perhaps Roxette feel almost unreal as they too were non-movers last week but descend five places and out of the top five seven days later.
12. Culture Beat – “Mr. Vain” Germany’s Culture Beat arrived on the scene this time last week with a new entry and seven days on they go up twelve places to number twelve.
11. Michelle Gayle – “Looking Up” Meanwhile, last week’s highest new entry from soap star Michelle Gayle looks up six places as she eyes up a top ten move this time next week.
10. Madonna – “Rain” Having joined the chart two weeks ago and not moved a muscle last week, Madonna falls three with the fifth single from her “Erotica” album of last year.
9. Gabrielle – “Dreams” The former number one from Gabrielle drops four, her ninth week with us and she’s down to number nine with her debut single.
8. Apache Indian – “Nuff Vibes” (EP) This week’s highest new entry comes from Apache Indian with new material and in doing so he bags his highest charting entry and his first top ten hit!
7. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Tease Me” Chaka Demus and Pliers have been teasing for ten weeks with this track and they are still top ten but down three places.
6. Billy Joel – “The River Of Dreams” With a climb of six, we welcome Billy Joel back to the UK top ten for the first time in nearly four years with the first taster of his brand new album.
5. Bitty McLean – “It Keeps Raining” While it does anything but rain on Bitty McLean as his debut single shoots up fourteen places this week to be the highest climber of all!
4. 4 Non Blondes – “What’s Up?” What is up with the 4 Non Blondes? well, it’s what’s coming down that hurts and they are down just one place with their UK chart debut.
3. Take That – “Pray” Down two are Take That with the song that has been number one for the past four weeks as they make way for something and someone else.
2. Urban Cookie Collective – “The Key, The Secret” The Urban Cookie Collective have made it this far now from their No.40 entry six weeks ago. They were last week’s highest climber for a second time and a jump of four places takes them within reach of the top spot.
1. Freddie Mercury – “Living On My Own” That is taken but the late Freddie Mercury this week as he goes up one place to claim his very first solo chart topping since with this remix of a track he originally recorded back in 1986. Can he live here on his own for a second, or will Urban Cookie Collective, Bitty McLean or even Billy Joel put an end to that? There’s only one way to find out…
