WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Waterfront

Waterfront had one hit and then they went out with the tide again. But did that make them ‘cry’?

Waterfront, comprised of Chris Duffy and Phil Cilia, were a Welsh pop act of the late 1980’s, formed in Cardiff in 1987. Signed to Polydor Records, they released their debut single, “Nature Of Love” in January 1989, but it just broke the UK top 75. The follow up “Broken Arrow” fared no better that Spring, but third time lucky that Summer and their third single, “Cry”, did make an impact. The song would peak at No.17 at home and following a release Stateside, it broke the US top ten and made No.2 on the US Adult Contemporary chart! Their self-titled debut album followed soon after but did not achieve the chart positions that “Cry” had, despite a further US top 100 hit with “Nature Of Love” (No.70).

Having attempted recording a second album, the duo split up in early 1991 and went their separate ways. Chris Duffy returned with a solo single in 1992, “All The Time In The World”, but this was not a success. Phil Cilia went on to form 10 Music & Media promoting new artists and bands, while Chris now works for Cardiff and Vale college promoting jobs and opportunites for youngsters. Waterfront regrouped in 2000 for a live show in London while in 2011, they finally recorded that second album, “Ghosts Of The Good”, twenty two years after the first one! All of Waterfront’s songs are now available to stream online, so take yourself back in time and remember this duo, if only for their biggest chart hit.
