The song, “I Got You Babe”, was originally recorded by Sonny and Cher in 1965
Sonny Bono (1935-1998) wrote and produced the song “I Got You Babe” and recorded it with his then wife Cherilyn Sarkisia (Cher). It was the second single to come from their debut album, “Look At Us”, and was released in July 1965, topping both the UK and US singles charts as well as being a top ten hit in over twenty other countries. The song has sold over a million copies on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1993, Cher re-recorded the song with cartoon characters Beavis and Butthead, taking this version to No.35 in the UK.
In 1985, British reggae band UB40 recorded a new version of the song with The Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde for their album “Baggariddim”. Their version was released as the lead single from the album in July and would also become a huge global hit, topping the UK chart once more as well as in Australia, The Netherlands and New Zealand. It made it to No.28 Stateside and went on to sell a good few million copies worldwide.
But which version is the best? SONNY and CHER’s or UB40 and CHRISSIE HYNDE’s?
