UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 15th August 1993
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 9th to Saturday 14th August 1993.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, thirty years ago, there were eight new entrys, eight climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. The Breeders – “Cannonball” We welcome American band The Breeders to the UK chart this week with their debut single which comes from their second studio album, coming out soon!
39. Ali and Frazier – “Uptown Top Ranking” Sadly for Ali and Frazier there’s no top ranking this week as they drop six places with their UK top 40 debut single.
38. Ice Cube – “Check Yoself” Ice Cube remains in the chart for another week and falls just two places with his second single to make it this far.
37. Sinclair – “Ain’t No Casanova” More debuts now and it’s UK rapper and producer Mike Sinclair who makes his top 40 debut with his third single to come out.
36. Jamiroquai – “Emergency On Planet Earth” Jamiroquai have enjoyed three top twenty hits so far since they arrived on the scene a years ago, but this one doesn’t make it and goes down four places.
35. UB40 – “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” Former chart toppers UB40 reach week fourteen on the chart with their version of this 1961 Elvis song which is down eight places.
34. Yazz and Aswad – “How Long?” Having been steady climbers for the past two weeks, Yazz and Aswad go the other way and drop three with their cover of this 1974 Ace song.
33. Whitney Houston – “Run To You” Whitney falls eight places this week with her latest cut from ‘The Bodyguard’ soundtrack. This one is just four weeks in.
32. Bee Gees – “Paying The Price of Love” We welcome back the Bee Gees this week with new music, their first since their 1991 album “High Civilization”. Their next is out next month.
31. Tasmin Archer – “Arienne” Back too comes Tasmin Archer, a year on from when she debuted with “Sleeping Satellite” and another track from her first album, “Great Expectations”.
30. Janet Jackson – “If” Four weeks on and the second single from Janet Jackson‘s new album is still with us but down twelve places as she leaves the top twenty.
29. Juliet Roberts – “Caught In The Middle” Also with four weeks on the chart is Juliet Roberts, but having gone up for the last two, she goes down five this week.
28. Daniel O’Donnell – “What Ever Happened To Old Fashioned Love?” It seems that Daniel O’Donnell can’t get any higher than No.20 on the UK chart. His last single peaked there and so has this one as he falls eight places.
27. Hulk Hogan and Green Jelly – “Anarchy In The UK” Wrestler Hulk Hogan and Green Jelly turned up last week with this cover of The Sex Pistols ‘classic’ and they take it up three in their second week.
26. Bon Jovi – “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” Bon Jovi peak with the latest single from their “Keep The Faith” album as it drops nine places after just one week in the top twenty.
25. Goodmen – “Give It Up” And the Goodmen also peak with their chart debut, which slips two places. It seems they have to give it up for someone else.
24. M People – “One Night In Heaven” M People depart the top twenty, where they arrived nine weeks ago with this song, which falls five. The group have a new one the way very soon.
23. The Spin Doctors – “Two Princes” The Spin Doctors rebounded the chart last week with this single and they go up again by four places, which is now their fifteenth week!
22. Dannii Minogue – “This Is It” This is it for Dannii Minogue in the top twenty with her cover of Melba Moore’s song, which goes down seven places.
21. The Pogues – “Tuesday Morning” The Pogues are back with new music this week and a big new entry. This is their first showing since the re-issue of “Fairytale In New York” in 1991 and their first new single to chart since “Fiesta” in 1988!
20. Haddaway – “What Is Love?” Three months on and Haddaway is still asking the question. His debut chart hit slumps four places but remains top twenty here.
19. Bad Boys Inc. – “Don’t Talk About Love” Meanwhile new fivesome boy band Bad Boys Inc. climb three places into the top twenty with their very first single release.
18. Robin S – “Luv 4 Luv” Robin S goes down four this week with her second single to chart here. Her debut album is called “Show Me Love” and it’s out now.
17. Aftershock – “Slave To The Vibe” Guy Routte and Jose Rivera call themselves Aftershock and after a couple of previous attempts, their third release finally makes it to the chart with this big new entry.
16. Roxette – “Almost Unreal” Falling three this week are Roxette with their contribution to the film soundtrack of ‘Super Mario Bros.’. Per and Maria are currently working on new material.
15. Madonna – “Rain” Madonna‘s rain can be heard falling on her window pane and her song about the rain also falls too, this week five places and out of the top ten.
14. Mariah Carey – “Dreamlover” Mariah Carey is back with something new and her third studio album is on the way too. This is her first chart appearance since “I’ll Be There” last Spring.
13. Gabrielle – “Dreams” More dreams next and it’s the former number one from Gabrielle as she floats out of the top ten, down four places in her tenth week.
12. Sarah Washington – “I Will Always Love You” With Whitney out of the upper half of the chart, that just leaves Sarah Washington with her dance version of Whitney’s former number one. A climb of eight makes her this week’s highest!
11. Michelle Gayle – “Looking Up” Michelle Gayle was looking up last week with her first single, but while she can see the top ten, the song stops and pauses as a non-mover.
10. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Tease Me” Chaka Demus and Pliers are still top ten. This week they fall three places with their debut single, which has been top ten for ten weeks now.
9. Take That – “Pray” Taking a big hit of six places is the former chart topper from Take That as they plummet out of the top three this week.
8. UB40 – “Higher Ground” Here come UB40 again and they bag this week’s highest new entry with something original this time from their brand new album, “Promises And Lies”.
7. 4 Non Blondes – “What’s Up?” What’s up and what’s down for the 4 Non Blondes this week? Well, they do go down three places and out of the top five.
6. Culture Beat – “Mr. Vain” German duo Culture Beat power into the top ten this week, up six places with their debut hit, which has been topping the charts across Europe.
5. Apache Indian – “Nuff Vibes” (EP) Last week’s highest new entry gave Apache Indian his first top ten hit and seven days on he climbs three places to put him in the top five.
4. Billy Joel – “The River Of Dreams” The last time Billy Joel was this high on the UK chart was ten years apo when “Uptown Girl” went to No.1. Is he on his way to another one? He goes up two this week…
3. Bitty Mclean – “It Keeps Raining” Once more, it does anything but rain for Bitty Mclean as his debut single, which was last week’s highest climber, climbs two places.
2. Urban Cookie Collective – “The Key, The Secret” Having made it this far, the Urban Cookie Collective were looking to go up just one more spot this week, only to find they have to make do with a non-mover.
1. Freddie Mercury – “Living On My Own” Which means for a second week running Freddie Mercury claims the top spot as the biggest seller of all. But can he make it three in a row, or will Bitty Mclean, Apache Indian or Billy Joel make a bid for it? There’s only one way to find out…
