35 years ago, Kylie donned a big rimmed red hat with a black trim to it in the video to “Got To Be Certain“. Now more than thirty years later, she replicates the hat almost identically in her new video for “Tension“. Known for her many costume changes in her videos, it’s a calculated nod to her own heritage in a video full of identity changes.
Reminiscent of the “Did It Again” video from 1997, Kylie ‘slips’ in an out of character in a sequence of events very familiar with Doctor Who fans, although Kylie looks like Madonna from the “Human Nature” era in one scene. With glitter and sparkles around her, she taunts and teases her ownself as the be-red-hatted Kylie sits eleganty, dusting off her brim, and looking into the mirror quoting lines like “Baby, there ain’t nothing better” and “I could do this forever with you”.
It was all so much more innocent back in 1988 when Kylie filmed the video for her third number one hit, “Got To Be Certain“. The single became her second release in the UK and made No.2 for three weeks in May that year. The video was carefree and almost child-like as Kylie enjoyed the merry-go-round and posing for the camera in those ridiculously large boots with, of course, her stockings pulled upto the knee. Oh…
