The song, “Theme From Harry’s Game”, was originally recorded by Clannad in 1982
Ciarán and Pól Brennan of the Irish band Clannad composed the song “Theme From Harry’s Game” for the group’s 1982 album, “Magical Ring”. It was used as the title track from the ITV drama series Harry’s Game and became their breakout hit, making No.5 on the UK singles chart and No.2 in Ireland. Thanks to its inclusion in the 1992 film ‘Patriot Games’, “Theme From Harry’s Game” was re-issued and became a top ten hit in The Netherlands, much higher than it had achieved a decade earlier.
In 1999, producer Nick Bracegirdle – aka Chicane – remixed and reworked the song into a chillout Dance tune, renamed “Saltwater”. The track was at a faster speed and featured the vocals of Clannad’s Moya Brennan, and served as the lead single from his 2000 album, “Behind The Sun“. When released in May 1999, “Saltwater” became a huge hit across the world, peaking at No.6 in the UK and topping the Dance chart, selling over 250,000 copies to date.
But which version is the best? CLANNAD’s original or CHICANE’s rework?
