UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 22nd December 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were five new entrys, one re-entry, thirteen climbers and four non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Julian Lennon – “Because”
We have a couple of new entries on the Christmas chart this year and the first comes from John’s son, Julian Lennon, with a cover of The Dave Clark Five single from 1964.

39. a-ha – “The Sun Always Shines On TV”
Next up with something new and the second single from Norwegian group a-ha to make the UK top 40, the follow up to their huge debut, “Take On Me”.

38. Full Force – “Alice, I Want You Just For Me”
The Full Force are new with this track, their first on their own, having accompanied Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam on “I Wonder If I Take You Home” earlier this year.

37. a-ha – “Take On Me”
Here come a-ha again with that impressive debut, which clocks up 14 weeks on the chart and is down just three places.

36. The Inspirational Choir – “Abide With Me”
Something new but traditional next as the American Inspirational Choir release this song just in time to make it to our chart.

35. Dionne Warwick and Friends – “That’s What Friends Are For”
Dionne Warwick and her friends are down four places this week having registered two months on the UK chart.

34. Paul McCartney – “We All Stand Together”
Another of last year’s Christmas songs gets a re-entry this year, this time from Paul McCartney and his collective of frogs!

33. Jennifer Rush – “Ring Of Ice”
This week’s chart is dominated with many artists and bands with more than one single and Jennifer Rush is no exception. Her newest is up three places.

32. The Concept – “Mr. DJ”
The Concept have just one and it’s going down! Week three sees them leave the top thirty, down five places.

31. Black Lace – “The Hokey Cokey”
Doing their hokey cokey and getting everyone involved are Black Lace as they climb eight places with their new entry from last week.

30. Iron Maiden – “Run To The Hills (Live)”
Iron Maiden run away from the hills this week as their latest live version of an earlier single falls four places.

29. Talking Heads – “Road To Nowhere”
Continuing to take the road from nowhere are Talking Heads as they drop five after three months on the chart.

28. Princess – “After The Love Has Gone”
Princess is up again this week, just one for her after five weeks in the top 40 with the follow up to “Say I’m Your Number One”.

27. UB40 – “Don’t Break My Heart”
UB40 clock up ten weeks with their latest and most original recording, which leaves the top twenty, down seven places.

26. Sting – “Russians”
Meanwhile, last week’s highest new entry from Sting goes up six places to give him a second top thirty hit of this year.

25. Cameo – “She’s Strange”
Strange things have happened for Cameo as this re-release has done better second time around, but it’s down three places this week.

24. Doug E Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew – “The Show”
With two months in the UK top 40, Doug E Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew continue their show but down six places this week.

23. Level 42 – “Leaving Me Now”
While Level 42 go up five this week with their second release of 1985 and the follow up to “Something About You”.

22. Jennifer Rush – “”The Power Of Love”
Here comes Jennifer Rush again, her former number one, which went back up the chart last week, drops one a week later.

21. Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle – “Saturday Love”
The highest new entry this week comes from US singers Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle, duetting together to give him a follow up to “If You Were Here Tonight” and Cherrelle her very first UK top 40 entry!

20. Elton John – “Wrap Her Up”
Elton John wraps things up for Christmas with another top twenty hit as his latest climbs three places.

19. Go West – “Don’t Look Down”
Going down four this week are Go West with their third to make it this far this year, all from their self-titled debut album.

18. Feargal Sharkey – “A Good Heart”
It’s been a great year for Feargal Sharkey with his first number one and one of the year’s biggest sellers. Three months on and he’s still top twenty, burt down five places.

17. Amazulu – “Don’t You Just Know It”
Good news for Amazulu this week as they pick their feet up and go up two places having been non-movers for the past two weeks.

16. Paul McCartney – “Spies Like Us”
Here comes Paul McCartney again, this time he’s a non-mover with the title track from the film of the same name.

15. Sophia George – “Girlie Girlie”
It’s another good week for Sophia George and her first UK chart hit, which moves into the top twenty, up ten places and that makes it this weeks highest!

14. Lionel Richie – “Say You, Say Me”
Going the other way is Lionel Richie, who falls three with his brand new recording, with a new album on the way in 1986.

13. Bronski Beat – “Hit That Perfect Beat”
Hitting that perfect beat once more are Bronski Beat as they go up four with the follow up to their cover of “I Feel Love”.

12. Starship – “We Built This City”
Still building cities but not building on last week’s rise are Starship as they get a non-mover with this one.

11. Bruce Springsteen – “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”
And amazingly going down on the Christmas chart with a Christmas song is Bruce Springsteen as he falls two places!

10. Dee C Lee – “See The Day”
The Christmas top ten starts with Dee C Lee going down four after seven weeks inside the top ten with her debut single.

9. Madonna – “Dress You Up”
Down just one this week is the umpteenth single from Madonna this year, who is currently recording new material for next year!

8. Wham – “I’m Your Man”
The first of two Wham songs is their former number one and their most recent and newest recording, which is down four.

7. Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin – “Separate Lives”
Living separate lives together this week are Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin, who are both non-movers with the same song.

6. Wham – “Last Christmas”
Here come Andrew and George again and it’s their Christmas releases from last year, which doesn’t make the top again, but is up four places.

5. Aled Jones – “Walking In The Air”
One step closer to the top is Aled Jones, who was last week’s highest climber, and goes up nine a week later.

4. Pet Shop Boys – “West End Girls”
Up one more spot go the Pet Shop Boys with their very first chart hit. The duo are set to release their debut album in the new year.

3. Band Aid – “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”
There’s a non-mover at number three for Band Aid with last year’s Christmas number one, which fails to make it two in a row.

There are just two records left. But who is at number two this Christmas…?

2. Whitney Houston – “Saving All My Love For You”
But we do have a new number one as Whitney Houston drops down one after two weeks on top with her first UK top 40 single.

1. Shakin’ Stevens – “Merry Christmas Everyone”
So how nice for Christmas that Shakin’ Stevens is back on top and with a climb of one, he secures this year’s biggest festive hit with a song that was due to have been released last year! Will he still be wishing everyone a merry Christmas in a week’s time, or will it be someone else that takes the top spot? There’ only one way to find out…
