UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 29th December 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were two new entrys, one re-entry, seventeen climbers and ten non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Keith Harris and Orville – “White Christmas”
Just missing the boat for the Christmas chart are Keith Harris and Orville with this tune, which is one of only two new entries this week.

39. The Concept – “Mr. DJ”
Sticking around but going down seven places this week are ‘The Concept’ after a month on the chart with this one.

38. Aretha Franklin – “Who’s Zoomin’ Who?”
While back on her own is Aretha Franklin with the other new entry, which makes this the highest this week and without the Eurythmics!

37. David Grant and Jaki Graham – “Mated”
There’s a re-entry this week for David Grant and Jaki Graham with their second duet of the year, which comes back a week after it left.

36. The Full Force – “Alice, I Want You Just For Me”
The Full Force continue to take some little steps with their first chart hit on their own. It’s up two this week.

35. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love”
The first of two Jennifer Rush songs on the chart is her former number one, which is down thirteen places, after four months on the chart!

34. Black Lace – “The Hokey Cokey”
Black Lace are still doing the hokey cokey but three down on last week and in their third week in the top 40.

33. a-ha – “Take On Me”
a-ha also have two songs on the chart, this is their very first and it goes back up four places after fifteen weeks with us.

32. Paul McCartney – “We All Stand Together”
Paul McCartney also has two songs in the top 40 and his release from last year with all the frogs in tow goes up two places.

31. Talking Heads – “Road To Nowhere”
Three months on and Talking Heads are still about with their biggest UK chart hit so far, but it’s down two on this week’s top 40.

30. Iron Maiden – “Run To The Hills (live)”
There are a number of non-movers from hereonin and Iron Maiden are one of them with the live version of one of their first singles to be released.

29. Jennifer Rush – “Ring Of Ice”
Not for the other Jennifer Rush song, which moves into the top thirty at last with a climb of four places after four weeks in.

28. Princess – “After The Love Has Gone”
Princess is also a non-mover and for the second time with this song, which clocks up seven weeks in the top 40.

27. a-ha – “The Sun Always Shines On TV”
The newest a-ha song is also going up and with a climb of twelve places, it’s this weeks highest, proving the sun shines on the Norwegian boys!

26. Cameo – “She’s Strange”
Cameo are down just one this week with the re-issue of this track from their most recent album of the same name.

25. Sting – “Russians”
Doing a swap with Cameo is Sting as his latest goes up one, the second to come from his debut solo album called “The Dream Of The Blue Turtles”.

24. UB40 – “Don’t Break My Heart”
Going back up the chart are UB40, eleven weeks after they joined us with this one it’s three places higher.

23. Level 42 – “Leaving Me Now”
Level 42 are making hard work of their latest which has been around for five weeks and is a non-mover on this week’s chart.

22. Doug E Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew – “The Show”
With nine weeks so far are Doug E Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew with their ‘show’ and they are going back up the chart, jumping over Level 42 and up two places.

21. Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle – “Saturday Love”
While last week’s highest new entry from Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle is also a non-mover failing to do anything in the last seven days!

20. Bruce Springsteen – “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”
With Santa Claus having done his job for another year, he can rest and so can Bruce Springsteen as he falls nine places.

19. Elton John – “Wrap Her Up”
Climbing one place is Elton John with the follow up to his bit top five hit, “Nikita”. This one has been on the chart for five weeks now.

18. Go West – “Don’t Look Down”
Going back up the chart, like so many others, are Go West. This week sees them one up on where they descended to last week.

17. Feargal Sharkey – “A Good Heart”
And that goes for Feargal Sharkey with his former chart topper, which is also up one place, now with three months in the top twenty!

16. Lionel Richie – “Say You, Say Me”
Down two places is the latest from Lionel Richie as a solo artist. His former group, The Commodores, scored a big hit earlier this year with “Nightshift”.

15. Amazulu – “Don’t You Just Know It”
Amazulu are still going strong and seven weeks on, their second top twenty hit of this year is up two places.

14. Sophia George – “Girlie Girlie”
Going up one is the first hit single from young Jamaican singer Sophia George as she bags commercial success here in the UK.

13. Paul McCartney – “Spies Like Us”
Paul McCartney’s other song on the top 40 is also going up. His title track from the film is up three to a new high this week!

12. Starship – “We Built This City”
While Starship are unable to build their chart placing any higher and for a THIRD consecutive week, they are non-movers one more.

11. Bronski Beat – “Hit That Perfect Beat”
Jumping over them are Bronski Beat as they continue to hit that perfect beat and go two places higher with their latest ‘hit’.

10. Dee C Lee – “See The Day”
Dee C Lee see’s the day once more in the top ten as she props up the bottom with a non-mover, ten weeks after she arrived.

9. Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin – “Separate Lives”
Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin are on the move this week having been non-movers this time last week, but it’s down two places.

8. Wham – “I’m Your Man”
The first of two Wham singles in the top ten sees them as non-movers with their former number one, the duo’s fourth so far…

7. Madonna – “Dress You Up”
Good news for Madonna as she goes back up the chart with her seventh single to be released this year. She’s up two.

6. Wham – “Last Christmas”
And here come Wham again with their other single, last year’s in fact, and it’s a non-mover just outside the top five.

5. Aled Jones – “Walking In The Air”
There’s no change for Aled Jones with his version of the song from ‘The Snowman’, just inside the top five.

4. Band Aid – “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”
While everyone from Band Aid drop down one, having been the Christmas number three hit of this year, their second year in the chart.

3. Pet Shop Boys – “West End Girls”
The Pet Shop Boys have been going up one every week and this week is no exception as they go up another one with their first top 40 single.

2. Whitney Houston – “Saving All My Love For You”
The previous chart topping single from Whitney Houston halts at number two for a second week. The song has been on the UK top 40 for two months now.

1. Shakin’ Stevens – “Merry Christmas Everyone”
Which means the Christmas number one hit from Shakin’ Stevens stays at the top for a second week. But will he be there in 1986, or will Whitney regain, the Pet Shop Boys move in or someone else arrive? There’s only one way to find out…
