Right from the start, Sweet Dreams were never giving up hopes for winning Eurovision. So did they…?
Teen trio Sweet Dreams were Britain’s hopefuls for Eurovision in 1983. The group were put together with Bobby McVay (b.1963), Carrie Gray (b.1965) and Helen Kray and recorded “I’m Never Giving Up”, written by Ron Roker and Phil Wigger. Having finished seventh in 1982 with Bardo‘s “One Step Further”, the UK were looking for another big win just as in 1981. On the night, in Munich, Sweet Dreams came in sixth, only slightly better than before. The single later charted at No.21, somewhat lower than Bardo achieved a year earlier. Sweet Dreams were not giving up just yet and they released “17 Electric (Look Out!)” that Summer. Sadly, it flopped and Sweet Dreams went out the window.
Little is know about the whereabouts of Helen Kray, but Carrie Gray would make her name later on ass a vocal coach, appearing on Pop Idol and Fame Academy in the 2000’s under the name of Carrie Grant, having married British singer David Grant (he of Jaki Graham duets). Bobby McVay continued in the music industry, eventually becoming one of the four members of the newly reformed The Fizz, the new Bucks Fizz, in 2015. Bobby remained with the former Eurovision winners until 2018 and recorded their big chart comeback album “The F–Z Of Pop” in 2017.
