The song, “Break My Stride”, was originally recorded by Matthew Wilder in 1983
American singer Matthew Wilder (b.1953) wrote the song “Break My Stride” with Greg Prestopino for his debut album “I Don’t Speak The Language” in 1983. The track was the second single released in the Summer of 1983 and it became his break out and also his biggest hit when it went top ten across the world, eventually peaking at No.5 Stateside and No.4 in the UK in 1984.
Austrian dance act Unique II covered the song in 1996 for their album “Level II”. Their dance version of the track would also become their biggest ever hit, going to No.1 in many parts of mainland Europe and No.2 in Australia , four places higher than Matthew’s original had reached! Unique II’s version did not chart on either side of the Atlantic, however.
German dance act Blue Lagoon updated the track in 2004 and put “Break My Stride” back in the top ten in many parts of Europe.
But which version is the best? MATTHEW’s original or UNIQUE II’s cover?
