The BBC Music Project “God Only Knows” Also Known As – The Guess Who Is Singing This Part Game

The BBC dropped a music bomb┬árecently by giving us a new version of “God Only Knows” performed by the best musical talent of a generation…

I loved the original by The Beach Boys and it’s especially great to see Brian Wilson included amongst the more current musical talent of the remake…

I love these types of collaboration projects and since we hear these songs more than we watch the videos most of us play the “who is singing this part” game and you can see a full list and review on the Guardian’s music blog.

It’s prompted me to think of what other “come togethers” there have been over the past so let’s have a trip down musical memory lane…

Band Aid – Do They Know It’s Christmas?

To raise awareness and money for famine in third world countries this is perhaps one of the biggest collaboration projects of all time. Recorded twice in the 80s (most people forget, or choose to forget, the second one) and again 20 years later.

The first version in 1984 was very raw and edgy…

The second version in 1989 was a Stock, Aitken & Waterman hit factory version and I’m quite sure Pete Waterman wasn’t just doing it for the good cause…

The 2006 version would probably be my favourite as it is more relaxed and more mellow…

I know the meaning behind the song is very sad but I still think of it as one of the best Christmas songs ever!

Ferry Aid – Let It Be

Following the Zeebrugge ferry disaster in 1987 this project performed a cover of the classic Beatles song…

Hillsborough

In 1989 the Hillsborough Disaster was the saddest day in the history of football. There have been two charity projects to remember all those who lost their lives that day…

Perfect Day

This was the predecessor to the “God Only Knows” project as it was also released by BBC Music for Children In Need and I am struggling to come to terms with the fact that it was 17 years ago…

Tears In Heaven

This was put together by Mrs Osbourne and was originally produced for the Tsunami disaster in 2004. It was slightly late in being released so also benefited the victims of hurricane Katrina

Helping Haiti

Finally, music God Simon Cowell, put together this cover of Everybody Hurts following the tragic earthquake in Haiti in 2010…

Although all these collaborations have come about because of tragic circumstances – I sure am glad they did!

What about you? What musical collaboration projects have you loved?
