Eurovision Song Contest 2016: Iceland – “Icebreaker” By Agnete

agnete1Eurovision 2016 is almost upon us and as the countries begin to reveal their entries let’s start giving them the once-over.

As I will be attending the grand final this year it’s even more super exciting for me!

The Iceland song is called “Icebreaker” and is performed by Agnete

ARTIST

Despite being just 21, Agnete Johnsen has already accumulated almost a decade of experience in the music business. As lead singer of the band the BlackSheeps, she won the 2008 Melodi Grand Prix Junior, a competition for young singers, with the monster hit Oro jaska, beana (Be quiet, dog). She competed with the same band at the 2011 Melodi Grand Prix, Norway’s national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest), and took part in TV programs such as Stjernekamp. Agnete was the youngest ever winner of the Norwegian edition of Strictly Come Dancing in 2014.

Agnete’s entry for the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest is called Icebreaker, and was written by Agnete herself together with Gabriel Alares and Ian Curnow.

SONG

The song is about being there for someone who is struggling. To Agnete, Icebreaker is one of the most honest and most personal things she has ever written, dedicated to her friend and their long lasting friendship

OPINION

This started off really upbeat and I was really enjoying it, anticipating a really big chorus but when it arrived it seemed to slow the tempo of the song down completely and I don’t think that works for me.

PREDICTION

Very unsure about this but I think it will scrape into the final but it could be a year of nul-points for Norway.

LYRICS

“Verse 1:

Every night
Before I sleep a shiver down my spine
Thoughts align
What can i do to make you listen

Like a northern light
You’re dancing over every border line
Passing every sign
Between reality and fiction

Pre-chorus:

Every single promise that you ever made
Spinning in my mind like a hurricane
Baby yes i hear your mayday

Chorus:

I’ll be your icebreaker
When you’re stuck in frozen water
(when you’re stuck in)
Frozen water

Verse 2:

You go astray
Just like a polaroid
You fade away
I’ll be you partner
and liberate you from your prison

Pre-chorus:

Baby yes i hear your mayday

Mid8:

We’re way too young to say good bye
Whenever you loose faith just hold the line
It takes a lot of nerve to save a life”

Good luck Agnete!
