Eurovision Song Contest 2016: Ukraine – “1944” By Jamala

maxresdefaultEurovision 2016 is almost upon us and as the countries begin to reveal their entries let’s start giving them the once-over.

As I will be attending the grand final this year it’s even more super exciting for me!

The Ukraine song is called “1944” and is performed by Jamala

ARTIST

Jamala made her first professional record at the age of nine, it was the album of songs for children. She has graduated from the National Music Academy named after Tchaikovsky in Kyiv, majoring in opera singing. Jamala was going to make a career in classical music but in summer 2009 Jamala went to The New Wave, the International Contest of Young Singers in Jūrmala (Latvia) where she won the grand prize.

This year, Jamala won YUNA awards such as “Best Album”, “Best Duo”, “Best Artist” and “Best Song”. Besides this she got ELLE Style Award (“Singer of the year”), Ukrainian National Award “Person of the Year” (nomination “Idol of Ukrainians”).

Jamala has released four albums. The latest record Podykh (Breath) was released in 2015. The singer released 12 official music videos. She played the main female part in the historical drama Guide, which got the best box-office among Ukrainian movies in 2014. Jamala also had a cameo in fantasy movie Polina by Belgian director Olias Barco.

SONG

1944 is dedicated to her great grandmother. In this song she says she uses complicated vocal technics, for instance, mugham. She also uses a duduk which she thinks is a beautiful instrument.

OPINION

Very, very weird. Strange voice, very political undertones and I just don’t think a song contest is a place to vent your frustrations about the past. Dislike a lot! Bring back Verka – that was still highly political but at least it was fun! I also watched the selection process for Ukraine and the final was the most drawn out, weirdest thing I have ever watched!

PREDICTION

It shouldn’t qualify, let alone win but stranger things have happened – watch this space

LYRICS

CRIMEAN TATAR

“When strangers are coming
They come to your house
They kill you all
And say
We’re not guilty
Not guilty

Where is your mind?
Humanity cries
You think you are gods
But everyone dies
Don’t swallow my soul
Our souls

Yasligima toyalmadim
Men bu yerde yasalmadim
Yasligima toyalmadim
Men bu yerde yasalmadim

We could build a future
Where people are free
To live and love
The happiest time

Where is your heart?
Humanity rise
You think you are gods
But everyone dies
Don’t swallow my soul
Our souls

Yasligima toyalmadim
Men bu yerde yasalmadim
Yasligima toyalmadim
Men bu yerde yasalmadim”

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

“When strangers are coming
They come to your house
They kill you all
And say
We’re not guilty
Not guilty

Where is your mind?
Humanity cries
You think you are gods
But everyone dies
Don’t swallow my soul
Our souls

I couldn’t spend my youth there
Because you took away my peace
I couldn’t spend my youth there
Because you took away my peace

We could build a future
Where people are free
To live and love
The happiest time

Where is your heart?
Humanity rise
You think you are gods
But everyone dies
Don’t swallow my soul
Our souls

I couldn’t spend my youth there
Because you took away my peace
I couldn’t spend my youth there
Because you took away my peace”

Good luck Jamala!
