Every UK Number One: I’d Like to Teach The World To Sing

What was the number one song in the UK on 8th January 1972?

“I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” by the New Seekers was Number One on 8th January 1972 and stayed there for four weeks.

I remember this commercial really well. We used to sing along with it.

What is interesting is the historical background to this commercial and song – the Vietnam War and we are really getting into the protesting – this is the year of Hanoi Jane[Fonda] and global opposition to this war. We had protests here in New Zealand too, as some of our soldiers went up to fight this war too. I think we just wanted some peace and love – the hippy generation.

Which brings me onto another anti-war song that was number one in New Zealand at the same time for 5 weeks. John Lennon with my all time favourite song from him.

The New Seekers hit was number one for 2 weeks here downunder in March – while John Lennon only reached the number one spot in the UK after his death.

I think we could definitely use that peace now.

So it back to the future.

Wikipedia

“I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony)” is a pop song that originated as the jingle “Buy the World a Coke”in the groundbreaking 1971 “Hilltop” television commercial for Coca-Cola. “Buy the World a Coke” was produced by Billy Davis and portrayed a positive message of hope and love, featuring a multicultural collection of teenagers on top of a hill appearing to sing the song. “Buy the World a Coke” repeated “It’s the real thing” as Coca-Cola’s marketing theme at the time.

The popularity of the jingle led to it being re-recorded by The New Seekers and by The Hillside Singers as a full-length song, dropping references to Coca-Cola. The song became a hit record in the US and the UK.

Lyrics

I’d like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow white turtle doves

I’d like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I’d like to hold it in my arms
And keep it company

I’d like to see the world for once
All standing hand in hand
And hear them echo through the hills
For peace through out the land
(That’s the song I hear)

I’d like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony

I’d like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony

I’d like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow white turtle doves

I’d like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I’d like to hold it in my arms
And keep it company

I’d like to see the world for once
All standing hand in hand
And hear them echo through the hills
For peace through out the land
(That’s the song I hear)

I’d like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony

I’d like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony

I’d like to teach the world to sing
