So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 26th September to midnight on Saturday 1st October 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were five new entry’s, twelve climbers and three non-movers. And it was announced like this…
40. Michael Jackson – “Another Part Of Me”
Down from No.31 and the final week in the top 40 for this “Bad” hit.
39. Mark Almond – “Tears Run Rings”
Marc falls three places this week from No.36.
38. Sabrina – “All Of Me”
Italian singer and model Sabrina returns with this Stock Aitken Waterman number that follows her Summer hit “Boys”.
37. Julian Cope – “Charlotte Anne”
New entry for author, poet and singer Julian from his fourth studio album “My Nation Underground”.
36. Spear Of Destiny – “So In Love With You”
New entry and the lead single from this British rock group’s forthcoming fifth studio album.
35. Beatmasters featuring P.P. Arnold – “Burn It Up”
Another new entry and a new song from The Beatmasters who have teamed up with American soul diva P.P. Arnold this time.
34. Coldcut – “Stop This Crazy Thing”
Down from No.27 and Coldcut’s final week inside the top 40 this week.
33. Transvision Vamp – “Revolution Baby”
After two weeks at No.30, Wendy and the boys fall three places this week.
32. Kim Wilde – “Never Trust A Stranger”
Kim is back with this weeks highest new entry and the third single from her hit album “Close”.
31. Jane Wiedlin – “Rush Hour”
Jane falls five places this week from No.26 with the lead single from her debut album “Fur”.
30. Brother Beyond – “The Harder I Try”
A fall of seven places this week for Nathan and Co. but it’s still week No.9 on the top 40!
29. Bomb The Bass – “Don’t Make Me Wait”
London born DJ and producer Tim Simenon aka Bomb The Bass falls eight places this week.
28. Salt’n’Pepa – “Shake Your Thang”
After THREE weeks at No.22, Salt’n’Pepa fall six places this week.
27. Sinitta – “I Don’t Believe In Miracles”
Sinitta gets a big climb of eleven places this week from last weeks new entry at No.38.
26. The Commodores – “Easy”
Lionel and Co. are down eight places this week with their re-released 1977 hit.
25. Bananarama – “Love, Truth And Honesty”
Another climb of three places from No.28 last week for Sara, Keren and Jacqui.
24. Bros – “I Quit”
Down ten this week for Matt, Luke and Craig and week four on the top 40.
23. Yazz and The Plastic Population – “The Only Way Is Up”
Former five-week chart topper falls another seven places this week from No.16 last week.
22. T’Pau – “Secret Garden”
A big climb this week for T’Pau, who are up fifteen places from last weeks new entry at No.37.
21. Hazell Dean – “Turn It Into Love”
Hazell has another good week, she’s up a further eight places from No.29 last week.
20. Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine – “Anything For You”
A fall of five this week for Gloria and the title track of her UK number one album.
19. Bon Jovi – “Bad Medicine”
Down two this week for the boys from New Jersey having peaked last week at No.17.
18. Yello – “The Race”
Dieter and Boris fall a further six places this week with a track from their “Flag” album.
17. Wee Papa Girl Rappers – “Wee Rule”
The Wee Papa Girl‘s get this weeks highest climber, up seventeen places from No.34 last week.
16. Alexander O’Neal – “Fake ‘88”
Alexander is still climbing too, up another eight places this week with “Fake” for 1988!
15. The Proclaimers – “I’m Gonna Be (500 miles)”
Charlie and Craig slip back four this week having peaked at last week’s No.11 with this infuriating number!
14. Duran Duran – “I Don’t Want Your Love”
Simon and the boys go up six places this week from last weeks new entry at No.20.
13. The Pasadenas – “Riding On A Train”
This five piece group hold firm this week with their second ever single, the follow up to “Tribute”.
12. Erasure – “A Little Respect”
Vince and Andy are up seven this week, they were brand new to the chart last week at No.19.
11. Bobby McFerrin – “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”
A big climb this week of fourteen places for this catchy tune from Bobby, having entered the chart last week at No.25.
10. Inner City – “Big Fun”
Another drop of just one place for Kevin Saunderson and Paris Grey with their massive No.1 dance anthem, which is also their debut single.
9. Pet Shop Boys – “Domino Dancing”
Chris and Neil fall two this week having peaked at No.7 last week with the first single from their new album “Introspective”.
8. Bill Withers – “Lovely Day ‘88”
Bill’s down three this week with, but is still able to hold that last note with dignity!
7. Rick Astley – “She Wants To Dance With Me”
Week three for Rick and he’s up another three places with the lead single from his second album due in the next few weeks.
6. Jason Donovan – “Nothing Can Divide Us”
Having dropped one place last week, Jason sticks here for a second week with his debut single!
5. Phil Collins – “Groovy Kind Of Love”
Former No.1 that’s spent the last two weeks at No.2 falls three this week.
4. Womack and Womack – “Teardrops”
A fifth week in the top five and another non-mover, this song keeps shifting in big numbers!
3. Whitney Houston – “One Moment In Time”
Up five places from last week’s No.8 for Whitney’s Olympic Games anthem.
2. The Hollies – “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”
Number one for the past two weeks, The Hollies are down with their 1969 reissue.
1. U2 – “Desire”
Bono and the boys climb two places this week to claim the top spot this week and release their new album “Rattle And Hum” tomorrow!
