UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 3rd April 1988
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 28th March to Saturday 2nd April 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were five new entry’s, sixteen climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Jermaine Stewart – “Get Lucky”
Jermaine Stewart makes a hasty return to the UK chart with our first new entry, hot on the heels of his recent top ten hit “Say It Again”, only a few weeks ago.
39. Taja Sevelle – “Love Is Contagious”
Going down eighteen places is US singer Taja Sevelle with her debut single and hopefully the first of many to grace the UK chart for some time yet.
38. Billy Ocean – “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car”
He’s been with us for ten weeks now, but this week Billy Ocean drops eleven places with a song that’s already one of his biggest sellers here.
37. Rick Astley – “Together Forever”
Also descending the chart is Rick Astley in his seventh week, down fourteen places with the fourth single from his debut album, “Whenever You Need Somebody“.
36. Bananarama – “I Want You Back”
But here comes another Stock Aitken Waterman song to follow and a new entry from the new look Rama‘s, following Siobhan’s exit last month, they’ve recruited pal Jacqui O’Sullivan and done a quite re-recording of this number which becomes the fourth single to come from their current album, “Wow”.
35. Vanessa Paradis – “Joe Le Taxi”
Fifteen year old Vanessa Paradis topped the French chart for eleven weeks with her debut single, that went top three here. She’s down fifteen places this week, her eighth week on the UK chart, but hopefully it won’t be long before we see her again.
34. Keith Sweat – “I Want Her”
…obviously not anymore, as Keith Sweat peaks and falls eight places this week with his UK chart debut.
33. Erasure – “Ship Of Fools”
Vince and Andy are preparing for their new album in just a few weeks time, but before then, the album’s lead single is down fifteen places this week in its sixth week on the top 40.
32. The Jesus and Mary Chain – “Sidewalking”
Jesus and Mary Chain are back with a brand new song and a new entry, the first to come from their forthcoming third studio album.
31. The Eurythmics – “I Need A Man”
Annie and Dave are also back with a new entry, the follow up to “Shame” and the third single to come from their most recent album, “Savage”.
30. Afrika Bambaataa and UB40 – “Reckless”
Afrika Bambaataa and his pals UB40 are out of the top twenty this week with a fall of eleven places.
29. Brenda Russell – “Piano In The Dark”
While US singer-songwriter-producer-musician Brenda Russell, who made her UK top 40 debut last week, goes up eleven places.
28. Def Leppard – “Armageddon It”
This weeks highest new entry comes from Def Leppard with the SIXTH single to come from their multi Platinum album “Hysteria” and the follow up to “Love Bites”, back in January.
27. The Primitives – “Crash”
UK band The Primitives have had good success with their first top 40 hit going top five a few weeks ago. This week, however, they go down twelve places.
26. Belinda Carlisle – “I Get Weak”
Belinda Carlisle leaves the top twenty where she’s been for five weeks now with her second UK top 40 hit dropping ten places this week.
25. T’Pau – “Sex Talk”
T’Pau returned to the chart for the second time this year, last week, and go up eleven places with the fourth single from their number one album, “Bridge Of Spies”.
24. Natalie Cole – “Pink Cadillac”
While Natalie Cole got her first UK top entry for thirteen years last week with this song that goes up ten places this week.
23. Pebbles – “Girlfriend”
US singer and dancer Pebbles made her UK chart debut last week and climbs eight places, looking to at least match the top five position this song attained in her home country.
22. AC/DC – “That’s The Way I Wanna Rock And Roll”
AC/DC were another of last weeks new entry’s with their second UK chart hit of 1988, which is also up ten places this week.
21. Jellybean featuring Adele Berti – “Just A Mirage”
Climbing for a second week is producer Jellybean with singer Adele Berti, up seven places and just begging for his fourth UK top twenty hit next week.
20. Hazell Dean – “Who’s Leaving Who?”
It’s a great week for Hazell Dean, who scores the highest climber of seventeen places and back in the UK top twenty after a gap of two years with her Stock Aitken Waterman produced song.
19. Status Quo – “Ain’t Complaining”
While one of last week’s joint highest climbers from Status Quo is up three places and into the top twenty.
18. Simon Harris – “Bass (How Low Can You Go?)”
Simon Harris peaked last week with his debut single and now put his theory of ‘how low can you go’ to the test with a fall of six places.
17. Whitney Houston – “Where Do Broken Hearts Go?”
Following him is Whitney Houston, down three for her, with the fourth single to come from her number one smash hit album from last year, “Whitney”.
16. Glen Goldsmith – “Dreaming”
British singer Glen Goldsmith has been ‘dreaming’ of a UK top twenty hit and with his third chart entry, does just that, with a climb of eight places this week!
15. Taylor Dayne – “Prove Your Love”
Taylor Dayne is back in the UK top twenty for a second time with a rise of ten places this week and looking for a second top ten hit next week, perhaps…?
14. Heart – “Never/These Dreams”
Heart drop out of the top ten this week by five places with their double A sider that’s been their biggest hit in two years here.
13. Fleetwood Mac – “Everywhere”
In the meantime, it’s been a great week for The Mac with a new entry last week and a climb of sixteen places this week, putting them back in the top twenty for the first time since “Little Lies”, last September.
12. Wet Wet Wet – “Temptation”
The Wets are still climbing, five more places this week, with the fourth single from their debut album, “Popped In, Souled Out”.
11. Debbie Gibson – “Only In My Dreams”
As so does Debbie Gibson, who is up two places, tantalisingly sitting outside the top ten, where her last single, “Shake Your Love”, ended up.
10. Kylie Minogue – “I Should Be So Lucky”
Former chart topper Kylie Minogue drops just two places this week with her debut UK single, remaining in the top ten for it’s tenth week!
9. Eighth Wonder – “I’m Not Scared”
One of two Pet Shop Boys written and produced singles in this week’s top ten is from Patsy Kensit’s band Eighth Wonder as they continue to climb the chart, seven weeks on, but just by one place this week.
8. a-ha – “Stay On These Roads”
After such great progress last week, a-ha fall back three places this week with the lead single and the title track of their forthcoming third studio album, which is out here in four weeks time.
7. Climie Fisher – “Love Changes Everything”
The other of last week’s joint highest climbers came from Simon and Rob who not only enter the top ten for a second time with a leap of four places, but in doing so, have beaten the chart position of their debut single back in January by three places!
6. Sinitta – “Cross My Broken Heart”
The fifth and highest song from Stock Aitken Waterman on this weeks chart is Sinitta’s latest, which moves absolutely nowhere and stays just where she ascended to seven days ago.
5. Iron Maiden – “Can I Play With Madness?”
Yes, you can play with madness Iron Maiden, but not in the top three as you did last week, two spots lower, their third week, however, int he top five with their biggest single yet.
4. Tiffany – “Could’ve Been”
There’s no second number one for Tiffany this week as she stays just where she is for another seven days with her second UK chart hit.
3. Aswad – “Don’t Turn Around”
It’s all change at the top as the number one from the last two weeks from Aswad is down three places this week, their first UK top 40 hit and their biggest, so far!
2. Bros – “Drop The Boy”
Not only is Tiffany denied the number one slot this week, so are Bros, who gain a third week in second place, the second of their two top 40 hits to do so, although this one is clinging on far longer than their first.
1. Pet Shop Boys – “Heart”
And so last week’s highest new entry from Chris and Neil climbs six places to give those Pet Shop Boys their fourth UK number one single and their third in less than twelve months! But can they stay there for a second week or will someone else deny them of that pleasure? There’s only one way to find out…
