UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 13th March 1988
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 7th to Saturday 12th March 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were nine new entry’s, fourteen climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. The Clash – “I Fought The Law”
The Clash are back on the chart with a new entry and a song that was originally released in 1979. It comes from a brand new compilation called “The Story of The Clash Volume 1”.
39. Jermaine Stewart – “Say It Again”
Jermaine Stewart may have to say it again another time, as he’s down fifteen places this week with his biggest UK chart hit for three years.
38. Climie Fisher – “Love Changes Everything”
Rob and Simon are back with a brand new entry and the follow up to their top ten hit in January, “Rise To The Occasion”. Can they better that with this song that becomes their second top 40 entry?
37. Debbie Gibson – “Only In My Dreams”
Debbie Gibson is back with a new entry or a re-entry, depending on how you look at it with what was her debut single from last year that missed the UK top 40, but following her recent success with “Shake Your Love”, the song makes a return and this time it’s already doing much better already.
36. Wet Wet Wet – “Temptation”
The Wets are also back with their fourth new entry since “Wishing I Was Lucky” last Summer and another track from their debut album, “Popped In Souled Out”.
35. The Communards – “For A Friend”
Not such good news for Jimmy and Richard who go back down the chart, seven places, with the latest single from their album “Red”.
34. Eddie Cochran – “C’mon Everybody”
And the late Eddie Cochran is also down, sixteen for him, with his re-released top ten hit from 1958.
33. Tiffany – “I Think We’re Alone Now”
Falling fourteen places is former number one Tiffany with her debut single that’s been around now for ten weeks. Don’t worry, she has another one on the way!
32. Magnum – “Days Of No Trust”
British rock band Magnum have been recording for ten years but have never had a top 40 single. That ends today with this new entry, which is taken from their forthcoming seventh studio album, “Wings Of Heaven”.
31. Keith Sweat – “I Want Her”
Keith Sweat made his chart debut last week with this US top five hit and is climbing three places higher here in the UK this week.
30. Sinitta – “Cross My Broken Heart”
Sinitta is back on the chart with a brand new entry, her fourth top 40 hit and the follow up to “G.T.O.”. She’s made the top twenty with the last three, how far can she go with this one…?
29. Simon Harris – “Bass (How Low Can You Go?)”
Here’s another new entry, this time from 25 year old British DJ and producer Simon Harris with his second single release that becomes his first top 40 hit.
28. Morrissey – “Suedehead”
The former highest new entry from The Smiths’ lead singer Morrissey and his debut single sinks a whopping twenty places this week, perhaps in readiness for his debut album which is out very soon.
27. David Lee Roth – “Just Like Paradise”
Van Halen’s DLR gained a new entry on last week’s chart and moves up eight places into the top thirty this week.
26. Aztec Camera – “How Men Are”
Slipping back one place is Roddy Frame and Aztec Camera with only their second UK top 40 single that comes from their new album, “Love”, that was released last November.
25. The Sisters Of Mercy – “Dominion”
Also dropping, but ten places this week are The Sisters Of Mercy with the follow up to last year’s top ten hit, “This Corrosion”.
24. Derek B – “Goodgroove”
Derek B still has a ‘goodgroove’ going on, but he’ll have to do it outside the top twenty as he’s down eight places this week.
23. Taylor Dayne – “Tell It To My Heart”
US singer Taylor Dayne has made an impressive debut here in the UK with this single going top three. She’s down nine places this week in her ninth week on the chart.
22. Tiffany – “Could’ve Been”
I promised you that Tiffany would be back, and here she is! A brand new entry with her second song on this weeks top 40. Can she make it two number one’s in a row? Only time will tell…
21. The Bangles – “Hazy Shade Of Winter”
Also from across ‘the pond’ are The Bangles, who sat outside the top ten last week with their cover over Simon & Garfunkel’s 1966 classic. They do no more with a fall of ten places this week.
20. Eighth Wonder – “I’m Not Scared”
The band Eighth Wonder lead by actress Patsy Kensit enter the UK top twenty for the first time with a climb of six places this week with their Pet Shop Boys produced single.
19. Johnny Hates Jazz – “Heart Of Gold”
While Johnny Hates Jazz go up four this week and into the top twenty for the third time, with the third single from their recent No.1 album, “Turn Back The Clock”.
18. Afrika Bambaataa and UB40 – “Reckless”
Also going into the top twenty for the first time in his career is Afrika Bambaataa with a climb of nine this week, along with his chart veteran buddies, UB40.
17. Bros – “Drop The Boy”
They left us last week asking when they will be famous but Matt, Luke and Craig are back with the follow up, which becomes this week’s highest new entry. Can they go one place higher to the very top with this one…?
16. Whitney Houston – “Where Do Broken Hearts Go?”
The fourth track from Whitney’s most recent album entered the chart last week and a climb of fourteen places puts her back in the UK top twenty for the first time this year.
15. Mel And Kim – “That’s The Way It Is”
Shockingly after three weeks of good progress and a fourth top ten hit, Mel and Kim Appleby go down five places this week with this new song from Stock Aitken Waterman, one of four on this weeks chart.
14. Eddy Grant – “Gimme Hope Jo’anna”
Also leaving the top ten this week with a drop of seven places is Eddy Grant with thats been his biggest hit for six years.
13. Eric B and Rakim – “I Know You Got Soul”
Last weeks highest new entry came from this US pair making their UK chart debut and they go up eight places and into the top twenty seven days on.
12. Heart – “Never/These Dreams”
One of last weeks joint highest climbers was from Heart who are up eight more places this week with their biggest hit since “Alone”.
11. Belinda Carlisle – “I Get Weak”
Belinda Carlisle is still on the climb, two for her this week to sit outside the top ten with her second UK chart hit that’s written by Diane Warren, the lady behind Aswad’s current release and last year’s big seller, “Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now”.
10. Billy Ocean – “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car”
Billy Ocean is still top ten but is five places less than he was this time last week with a track from his current album, “Tear Down These Walls”.
9. Coldcut featuring Yazz and The Plastic Population – “Doctorin’ The House”
Having peaked last week, producers Coldcut along with Yazz and co. are dropping back three places with their respective debut single.
8. Bomb The Bass – “Beat Dis”
Tim Simenon is also falling this week, five places for him, also with his debut single that’s been a huge success on the dance chart as well.
7. Taja Sevelle – “Love Is Contagious”
US singer Taja Sevelle is also a debutante with this song that flopped in her home country. Not so here, with a climb of ten this week, she enters the UK top ten.
6. Erasure – “Ship Of Fools”
Vince and Andy have had another great week, moving up six places and into the top ten for the fourth time with the first track to come from their new album, that’s due out next month.
5. The Primitives – “Crash”
Another band doing very well with their top 40 debut are The Primitives, who move into the top five this week with a climb of four places.
4. Aswad – “Don’t Turn Around”
Not content with being one of last week’s highest climbers, Aswad are at it again with a leap of eighteen places to become this weeks sole highest climber and the second single from Diane Warren on this weeks chart.
3. Vanessa Paradis – “Joe Le Taxi”
15 year old Vanessa Paradis has topped the French chart for eleven weeks with her debut single and she moves one place closer the top of the UK chart this week.
2. Rick Astley – “Together Forever”
Rick Astley got his third top two hit last week with the fourth single to come from his debut album “Whenever You Need Somebody“. He holds tight to that position this week for a second week in a row.
1. Kylie Minogue – “I Should Be So Lucky”
Which means that the biggest of Stock Aitken Waterman‘s four songs on this weeks chart remains at the top for a fifth week. Kylie Minogue becomes the first artist since T’Pau to achieve a five week chart topper. Can she make that an even rarer six weeks or can Vanessa Paradis, Aswad or The Primitives knock her off? There’s only one way to find out…
