UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 6th March 1988
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 29th February to Saturday 5th March 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were five new entry’s, eighteen climbers and one non-mover! And it was announced like this…
40. T’Pau – “Valentine”
T’Pau are down sixteen this week with their valentine ode that’s been another top ten hit for them.
39. Elton John – “Candle In The Wind ’88”
And Elton is also down sixteen places with the live version of his 1972 single, recorded in Sydney last year.
38. Icehouse – “Crazy”
Our first new entry is from an Australian band who have been recording since 1979 but have never had a UK hit. That all changes today with the lead single to come from their new, fifth studio album, that was released late last year.
37. Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle – “Never Knew Love Like This”
Alexander and Cherrelle are still about but dropping just six places this week with their second duet.
36. Bros – “When Will I Be Famous?”
Bros have been on the chart now for twelve weeks with their first top 40 hit but are down fifteen places with it this week. Hopefully we will see more of them in the future.
35. David Lee Roth – “Just Like Paradise”
There’s a new entry for Van Halen’s Dave Lee Roth who gets his first UK top 40 hit with a song that comes from his third studio album, “Skyscraper”.
34. Keith Sweat – “I Want Her”
And there’s another new entry and a UK chart debut next for US R&B singer Keith Sweat, who has already gone top 5 Stateside with this song, having already been recording for three years over there.
33. Michael Jackson – “Man In The Mirror”
Jacko is down eight this week with the fourth single to come from the “Bad” album and the first not to make the top twenty over here.
32. Was Not Was – “Spy In The House Of Love”
After two weeks on hold, Was Not Was are down ten, still looking for that spy in the house of love. Maybe they’re out walking their dinosaur…?(!)
31. Echo and The Bunnymen – “People Are Strange”
Sliding back two places and out of the top thirty this week are Echo and The Bunnymen with their track that comes from the film ‘The Lost Boys’.
30. Whitney Houston – “Where Do Broken Hearts Go?”
Whitney is back with a new entry and the fourth single to come from her latest album, “Whitney”, which is currently also flying up the US singles chart as well.
29. The Mission – “Tower Of Strength”
The Mission leave the top twenty with a fall of eleven places this week, their second song to reach that part of the chart.
28. The Communards – “For A Friend”
Richard and Jimmy made a return last week with the latest single from their “Red” album, which goes up eight places this week.
27. Afrika Bambaataa and UB40 – “Reckless”
Another new entry taking a big leap this week is from Afrika Bambaataa with able support from UB40, who collectively are up thirteen places.
26. Eighth Wonder – “I’m Not Scared”
Also up this week with their first top 40 entry are Eighth Wonder, twelve places for them, with their Pet Shop Boys written and produced single.
25. Aztec Camera – “How Men Are”
And so are Aztec Camera with only their second top 40 hit, which is up eight places and into the top thirty.
24. Jermaine Stewart – “Say It Again”
Going the other way is Jermaine Stewart with a drop of thirteen places, having scored his second top ten hit only two weeks ago.
23. Johnny Hates Jazz – “Heart Of Gold”
With this year’s first number one album on the chart, Johnny Hates Jazz returned to the singles chart last week with the third single from that album, which is up nine places.
22. Aswad – “Don’t Turn Around”
There are two joint high climbers this week and this is one of them, with their first UK top 40 hit ever, reggae trio Aswad are up fifteen places with a song from the writers of “Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now“.
21. Eric B and Rakim – “I Know You Got Soul”
Not many new entries this week and this is the highest of them all from hip hop duo Louis Eric Barrier and William Michael Griffin (Rakim) who make their UK chart debut together in fine style.
20. Heart – “Never/These Dreams”
The other high climber of fifteen places is from US rock band Heart who are back in the UK top twenty for the second time in twelve months, the follow on from “Alone” last year.
19. Tiffany – “I Think We’re Alone Now”
Tiffany‘s former number one is out of the top ten with a drop of nine places this week, now her lowest UK chart position yet!
18. Eddie Cochran – “C’mon Everybody”
Well, Eddie hasn’t quite matched the top ten placing that this song achieved thirty years ago, as he is down four places this week.
17. Taja Sevelle – “Love Is Contagious”
US newcomer Taja Sevelle made her UK debut last week and she can celebrate this week with a climb of eleven places, still doing much better than this song achieved Stateside last year.
16. Derek B – “Goodgroove”
Also doing well again this week is Derek B after a big climb last week, he’s up three more places this week with his UK top 40 first.
15. The Sisters Of Mercy – “Dominion”
Just as The Sisters Of Mercy are down two this week with their second UK top twenty hit.
14. Taylor Dayne – “Tell It To My Heart”
Taylor Dayne is another US female who has enjoyed better success here than in her own country with her recent top three debut. She’s down eight this week in her eighth week on the UK chart.
13. Belinda Carlisle – “I Get Weak”
Belinda Carlisle was last week’s big high climber of twenty two places and she’s up three more this week with the second single to come from her album, “Heaven On Earth”.
12. Erasure – “Ship Of Fools”
While Erasure were last week’s highest new entry and enjoy a climb of eight places with the first new song to come from their forthcoming third studio album, due next month.
11. The Bangles – “Hazy Shade Of Winter”
Still feeling the winter are The Bangles who take their Simon & Garfunkel 1966 cover up one this week to sit outside the UK top ten.
10. Mel and Kim – “That’s The Way It Is”
It’s a bumper week for Stock Aitken Waterman this week with THREE singles in the top ten! The first sees the return of Mel & Kim who are up six places with their brand new single, courtesy of the boys.
9. The Primitives – “Crash”
The Primitives are doing just as well with their UK chart debut which is also up six places and into the top ten.
8. Morrissey – “Suedehead”
Meanwhile, Morrissey’s debut solo single is down three places while we await his debut album to come in just a few weeks time.
7. Eddy Grant – “Gimme Hope Jo’anna”
It’s been a better week for Eddy Grant who has been stuck in the same position for the past two weeks, he’s up one this week with his first top ten hit for five years.
6. Coldcut featuring Yazz and The Plastic Population – “Doctorin’ The House”
Also climbing with their mutual chart debut are producer Coldcut along with singer Yazz and her Plastic Population who go up three more places this week.
5. Billy Ocean – “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car”
While Billy Ocean slips two places having been in third position for the past two weeks, with his biggest UK chart hit since “When The Going Gets Tough”.
4. Vanessa Paradis – “Joe Le Taxi”
France’s Vanessa Paradis has topped the chart in her home country for eleven weeks with this single and she’s still going strong here with a climb of three places this week and heading for the top.
3. Bomb The Bass – “Beat Dis”
After two weeks in second place, Tim Simenon aka Bomb The Bass falls back one place with his debut single.
2. Rick Astley – “Together Forever”
Here’s Stock Aitken Waterman song number two from Rick Astley, who’s up two this week and gets his third top two hit out of four singles in doing so!
1. Kylie Minogue – “I Should Be So Lucky”
But they’re all still failing to knock the 19 year old young lady from Australia from the top. Again, thanks to Stock Aitken Waterman, Kylie Minogue remains on top for a fourth week. Can she make it a fifth or can Rick, Vanessa or someone else topple her? There’s only one way to find out…
