UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 14th February 1988
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 8th to Saturday 13th February 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were ten new entry’s, eleven climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Morris Minor and The Majors – “Stutter Rap”
Falling seventeen places this week is Morris Minor and his Majors after nine weeks on the chart.
39. LL Cool J – “Going Back To Call”
LL Cool J is back in the UK top 40 with our first new entry this week. It’s the first single to come from a new album he has coming out and his first appearance since “I Need Love” last Summer.
38. The Christians – “Ideal World”
The Christians are down sixteen places this week with their biggest UK singles chart hit so far and with ten weeks, it looks like their last for now.
37. Bourgeois Tagg – “I Don’t Mind At All”
Brent Thomas Bourgeois is the lead singer and together with Larry Tagg, they have formed Bourgeois Tagg and make their UK chart debut with a song that’s already been top 40 Stateside.
36. Robert Plant – “Heaven Knows”
He went up last week and he goes down this week, Robert Plant reverses three places with the lead single from his new album which is out in two weeks time.
35. Luther Vandross – “Give Me The Reason”
While Luther is down seven with the re-issue of the title track of last year’s album which has performed better second time around.
34. Cliff Richard – “Two Hearts”
Cliff Richard is back on the top 40 with a new entry, the fourth single to come from his most recent album, “Always Guaranteed”, and the follow up to “Remember Me?”.
33. George Harrison – “When We Was Fab”
And so is former Beatle George Harrison, who is new on with the follow up to last year’s hugely successful “Got My Mind Set On You”!
32. Eddie Cochran – “C’Mon Everybody”
Here’s a song that’s a new entry but a chart return after an absence of thirty years from the late Eddie Cochran (1938-1960), who originally took this to No.6 first time around. Can he better that this time…?
31. Deacon Blue – “Dignity”
Deacon Blue finally broke the top 40 last week with their original debut single from earlier last year and they’re up one place with it this week.
30. The Bangles – “Hazy Shade Of Winter”
Making their first appearance of 1988 on the UK top 40 are The Bangles with this new entry and a cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s 1966 classic which has been recorded for the soundtrack of a new film called ‘Less Than Zero’.
29. Vanessa Paradis – “Joe Le Taxi”
Here’s a young (15 years old) French singer with a new entry and making her UK chart debut with her debut single that’s been number one in her home country for five weeks now! Could she be a future chart topper here…?
28. Two Men, a Drum Machine and a Trumpet – “Tired of Getting Pushed Around”
Messrs. Cox and Steele are down nine places this week and out of the top twenty with their ‘side project’ away from the Fine Young Cannibals.
27. Michael Jackson – “Man In The Mirror”
While Jacko is back after just three weeks absence with the follow up to “The Way You Make Me Feel” and the fourth single to come from his current smash album, “Bad”.
26. Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle – “Never Knew Love Like This”
Alexander and Cherrelle got their second UK chart hit duet last week and are up eight places this week, it is of course, the follow up to “Saturday Love”.
25. Coldcut featuring Yazz and The Plastic Population – “Doctorin’ The House”
Here’s a collective collaborative chart debut now from producers Coldcut with 27 year old singer Yasmin Evans (Yazz) and The Plastic Population all in tow that samples TV sounds and dialogue along with Yazz’s original vocals!
24. Nitro Deluxe – “Let’s Get Brutal”
After a big climb last week, Nitro Deluxe stays where he is for a second week with his first UK top 40 hit.
23. Joyce Sims – “Come Into My Life”
Joyce Sims is slipping gracefully this week, six places, but she does leave the top twenty in doing so.
22. Krush – “House Arrest”
The same amount as Krush also fall and out of the top twenty in their eleventh week on the chart.
21. Was Not Was – “Spy In The House Of Love”
There must still be a “Spy In The House Of Love” as Was Not Was are looking and need to go up five places to find them!
20. Belinda Carlisle – “Heaven Is A Place On Earth”
Still in the top twenty but down seven this week is former chart topper Belinda Carlisle with her first solo UK top 40 hit.
19. Dollar – “Oh L’amour”
Following her and down eight this week are Dollar with their biggest hit for six years, which is a cover of an Erasure song that wasn’t a hit!
18. Whitesnake – “Give Me All Your Love”
Staying put this week are Whitesnake who moved into the top twenty last week and remain, in place and quite happy to sit still.
17. Sinead O’Connor – “Mandinka”
But bypassing them is Sinead O’Connor with a song that’s already her first top 40 entry, now she moves up five places to make it her first top twenty hit!
16. Billy Idol – “Hot In The City”
It’s still “Hot In The City” for Billy Idol even though he’s down two places this week with his follow up to last year’s big hit, “Mony, Mony”.
15. Terence Trent D’Arby – “Sign Your Name”
As Terence Trent D’Arby slides back three this week with his fourth chart hit and, so far, his biggest and highest placed.
14. The Beatmasters featuring The Cookie Crew – “Rok Da House”
It’s down five and out of the top ten this week for The Beatmasters and the two young ladies that form The Cookie Crew with their joint debut single.
13. The Mission – “Tower Of Strength”
While last week’s highest new entry from The Mission climbs seven places, now their second highest placing behind “Wasteland” that made No.11 early last year. Can they beat that next week?
12. Eddy Grant – “Gimme Hope Jo’anna”
It’s been another great week for Eddy Grant, he’s up thirteen places to become this week’s highest climber and in doing so, returns to the top twenty for the first time in five years!
11. Jack’n’Chill – “The Jack That House Built”
Jack and Chill have been doing very well these last four weeks with their chart debut, taking it top ten last week but sadly, they leave the big ten this week with a fall of five places.
10. Debbie Gibson – “Shake Your Love”
After making her highest UK chart position yet last week, Debbie Gibson falls back three places with her second single released over here…with more yet to come!
9. T’Pau – “Valenine”
T’Pau are celebrating valentine’s with a climb of six places and their third consecutive top ten hit at the same time!
8. Jermaine Stewart – “Say It Again”
Also on the up is Jermaine Stewart who climbs two places this week with the second UK top ten hit of his career.
7. Elton John – “Candle In The Wind ’88”
While Elton is down two with the live version of his 1972 single that’s already more successful than the latter was, sixteen years ago.
6. Bros – “When Will I Be Famous?”
Matt, Luke and Craig are down three this week with their top 40 debut which peaked two weeks ago and now in its tenth week in total on the chart.
5. Bomb The Bass – “Beat Dis”
This weeks highest new entry is also a chart debut from London based produced Tim Simenon who goes by the name of Bomb The Bass. This is his first single which he has produced with Belgian producer Pascal Gabriel.
4. Billy Ocean – “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car”
Last week’s highest climber from Billy Ocean is up four places and into the top five, his highest singles chart position since “When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going” in early 1986!
3. Taylor Dayne – “Tell It To My Heart”
As Taylor Dayne improves on her chart position seven days ago with a climb of one place, now even higher than this single reached Stateside late last year.
2. Tiffany – “I Think We’re Alone Now”
It’s all change at the top – After three weeks, Tiffany is down one place with her UK debut which was also a US chart topper as well.
1. Kylie Minogue – “I Should Be So Lucky”
Swapping places with her is the 19 year old Australian actress Kylie Minogue who moves up one place with her debut single and at the same time, she becomes the third female artist in a row to be number one this year! It is of course another number one for hitmakers Stock Aitken Waterman as well as Kylie’s second chart topper as she was number one in Australia last year with a recording of “The Locomotion”. That stayed there for seven weeks, so can Kylie make it a second week here, or can Taylor Dayne, Billy Ocean, Bomb The Bass or someone else stop her? There’s only one way to find out…
