UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 31st January 1988
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 25th to Saturday 30th January 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were six new entry’s, eighteen climbers and one non-mover! And it was announced like this…
40. Jellybean – Jingo”
Jellybean is ‘jingo-ing’ down twelve places this week, his seventh week on the top 40 and it looks like his last for now.
39. Nitro Deluxe – “Let’s Get Brutal”
There’s a new entry next from US house producer Manny Stretching who goes by the name of Nitro Deluxe with his second single released, which becomes his first top 40 hit over here, today.
38. Was Not Was – “Spy In The House Of Love”
Was Not Was are back in the UK top 40 following their huge hit “Walk The Dinosaur” last year, this new entry was actually released a year ago, but only made No.51 here. Second time around, it’s already doing much better!
37. Bananarama – “I Can’t Help It”
After just four weeks on the chart, Sara, Keren and Siobhan are down fifteen places with the third single to come from their latest album, “Wow!”.
36. Eddy Grant – “Gimme Hope Jo’anna”
But here comes a new entry and a top 40 return for Eddy Grant, his first in over five years (“Electric Avenue” was the last) and the lead single to come from a new album which will follow next month.
35. The Fall – “Victoria”
The Fall are back in the top 40 for the first time in twelve months. This new entry is also the first track to be taken from their forthcoming, tenth studio album, out next month.
34. Sharpe and Numan – “No More Lies”
Gary Numan and Bill Sharpe move up one place this week, following their chart return last week.
33. All About Eve – “Wild Hearted Woman”
As do All About Eve, who also rise one more place this week, with their top 40 debut.
32. INXS – “New Sensation”
While INXS go down five places this week, with the first single to come from their current album, “Kick”.
31. Sweet Tee – “I Got Da Feelin’”
Sweet Tee is the stage name of Toi Jackson, who made a return to the top 40 last week after an absence of three years, and this week he’s up eight places.
30. Pet Shop Boys – “Always On My Mind”
Chris and Neil are down ten places this week and out of the top twenty now with their former Christmas number one.
29. Sinead O’Connor – “Mandinka”
Ireland’s Sinead O’Connor made her top 40 debut last week with this track, which is up nine places this week.
28. The Screaming Blue Messiahs – “I Wanna Be A Flintstone”
The Screaming Blue Messiahs also made their chart debut last week with this ‘quirky’ number, this week, they’re also climbing, eight places.
27. Billy Ocean – “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car”
Billy Ocean is back on the top 40 for the first time in two years with this brand new single that features on his new album, “Tear Down These Walls”.
26. Luther Vandross – “Give Me The Reason”
Luther brought this two year old song back to the chart last week and climbs six places with it, now its highest ever position over here!
25. Whitesnake – “Give Me All Your Love”
While Whitesnake gain their fourth UK top 40 hit from their self-titled current album, the follow up to “Is This Love?”, which is this week’s highest new entry!
24. Wet Wet Wet – “Angel Eyes”
The Wets are down nine this week and out of the top twenty with the third single to come from their debut album, “Popped In Souled Out”.
23. The Stranglers – “All Day And All Of The Night”
But The Stranglers are down ten with their version of The Kinks 1968 original which just stopped short of equalling their UK chart high.
22. Cher – “I Found Someone”
Another song leaving the top twenty is Cher, who falls eleven places this week with her biggest UK chart hit for six years.
21. AC/DC – “Heatseeker”
And down nine places after two weeks on hold are Australian rockers AC/DC, one of three artists from that country on this weeks chart.
20. T’Pau – “Valentine”
T’Pau are back in the top twenty for a third time in five months. Their new entry from last week is up thirteen places and looking good for valentine’s itself!
19. Climie Fisher – “Rise To The Occasion”
But Climie Fisher are down nine this week, having spent the past three weeks at the very foot of the top ten.
18. Two Men, a Drum Machine and a Trumpet – “Tired of Getting Pushed Around”
The ‘Two Men’ from Fine Young Cannibals take their Trumpet and their Drum Machine up three more places this week and into the top twenty.
17. Jermaine Stewart – “Say It Again”
And Jermaine Stewart is back in the top twenty as he goes up eight more places this week, three years after his last chart smash, “We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off”!
16. Kylie Minogue – “I Should Be So Lucky”
Neighbours actress turned Stock Aitken Waterman protege Kylie Minogue made her chart debut last week and it’s going well so far as she climbs fifteen places this week.
15. The Christians – “Ideal World”
But slipping back one place to where they were two weeks ago are The Christians, with their biggest single yet.
14. Morris Minor and The Majors – “Stutter Rap”
Falling nine places and out of the top ten are Morris Minor and his Majors with their “Ssssssss-tutter Rap”.
13. Billy Idol – “Hot In The City”
Moving up five places is Billy Idol with his re-released 1982 single that’s doing far better second time around.
12. Jack’n’Chill – “The House That Jack Built”
Jack and Chill continue their assault on the chart with their debut single, up seven this week.
11. Joyce Sims – “Come Into My Life”
But sliding down four places and out of the top ten is Joyce Sims with her biggest UK chart hit so far.
10. Elton John – “Candle In The Wind ’88”
Elton John is back in the top ten for the first time in three years as he climbs six places this week.
9. Debbie Gibson – “Shake Your Love”
While last week’s highest climber, Debbie Gibson, scores her first UK top ten hit with a climb of eight places this week, bettering her debut single from last year, “Only In My Dreams”.
8. Taylor Dayne – “Tell It To My Heart”
Not satisfied with being last week’s highest new entry, UK chart newcomer Taylor Dayne becomes this week’s highest climber as she moves up sixteen places and straight into the top ten in her second week!
7. Dollar – “Oh L’amour”
David and Therese continue to celebrate their first top ten hit in six years with a climb of two places this week and also continue to better Erasure’s original from three years ago!
6. Krush – “House Arrest”
After a rebound last week, Krush drop two places this week with their debut single.
5. The Beatmasters featuring The Cookie Crew – “Rok Da House”
Climbing three places and into the top five this week with their joint debut release are producers The Beatmasters with Susie and Debbie who are The Cookie Crew.
4. Terence Trent D’Arby – “Sign Your Name”
Terence falls another one place this week with his biggest UK hit so far, taken from his album “Introducing The Hardline According To…”, which stays at the top of the album chart for a second week.
3. Belinda Carlisle – “Heaven Is A Place On Earth”
Following him with a fall of one more place this week is former chart topper Belinda Carlisle, who finds her album, “Heaven On Earth”, dropping back two to No.8 this week.
2. Bros – “When Will I Be Famous?”
Matt, Luke and Craig are storming the chart this time with their second single released. They move up four this week and surely need not to be told of the answer to the question they pose now?(!)
1. Tiffany – “I Think We’re Alone Now?”
Which means 16 year old Tiffany Darwish takes pole position for a second week with her former US chart topper and her cover of Tommy James and the Shondells 1967 classic, which incidentally, failed to chart here and reached No.4 in America at the time! Can she keep her place for a third week or will the unstoppable Bros deny her of that? There’s only one way to find out…
