We talk to Matt LeGrand about his latest single “12:00 AM” and much more.
by Christopher Smith
Last month we premiered Chicago singer Matt LeGrand’s awesome new single “12:00 AM”. Now it’s available on Spotify and with a video, we thought it would be great to catch up with Matt himself and find out what he’s been up to and what he has planned in the not so distant future!
TAPM: Have you always wanted to be a singer/pop star and if so, what’s your earliest memory of this?
Matt: I started playing music when I was 11 years old. I remember that my mother bought me my first guitar after she took me to my first concert which was a Rolling Stones show! (I know what you’re thinking. And the answer is yes I do have a very cool mother!) Even before 11 years old though, I remember getting up in the mornings and being so full of energy that I just had to sing, dance and entertain. My go-to song was “China Girl” by David Bowie. I grew up partaking in many different hobbies, as a normal kid would, from hockey to skateboarding to, believe it or not, juggling. Those came and went, but one thing was always consistent — I always came back to music!
TAPM: It must of felt pretty special to release a new single and make videos, something only a few get the opportunity to do?
Matt: It really does feel surreal. I have to remind myself everyday that this is what I get to do. The journey is wonderful and it has tested me quite a bit already. It’s really not easy to break in this industry. It takes a lot of hard work and repetition. I think one of the hardest things to do is to continue to believe in yourself. You literally have to keep telling yourself that you can make even when it seems absolutely impossible (which is a lot of the time.) I’m thankful for where I am and for the people that have helped me get to where I am. It may look like it’s a one-man show at times but there are some very special hard working individuals that work behind the curtain.
TAPM: Do you have an album planned for the future and if so, how far advanced is this?
Matt: Yes! I’m hoping that it will be out the beginning of November! It’s my debut EP! It’s going to have a great variety of producers from new up and comers to industry veterans! It’s going to feature everything from pop, acoustic, urban, and dance. I want the message to be about diversity and stepping into unknown ground. I know I’ve had to definitely step out there on this one and I want my fans to come with me!
TAPM: Are there any countries you would like to travel to, to promote your music and perhaps play live?
Matt: I’d love to go to Japan and Southeast Asia! I’m in love with the culture and of course the cuisine. This would be fantastic! Let’s make this happen.
TAPM: Is there an artist or group you would love to record with or play live with?
Matt: I’d really like to play with Coldplay. I am a big Chris Martin fan for his work on and off the stage. Would love to meet the guys someday!
And we can’t wait to hear more from Matt over the coming months and indeed years! Matt is a fast-rising star who we are following closely, so be sure to keep an eye out for future releases and news here!
