COVER vs ORIGINAL: Only You

COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Only You’

It Will Never Only Be You!

By Steve McSteveface

‘Only You’ is a song written by English musician Vince Clarke. He wrote it while with Depeche Mode, but recorded it in 1982 after forming the duo Yazoo with Alison Moyet. This was the original version of this song.

Lyrically, ‘Only You’ is a torch song, and is about the resignation of a relationship. This version debuted at number seventy-two on the UK singles chart, on 11th April. Over the next few weeks, the song steadily climbed the chart, and on 16th May peaked at number two.

The very next year An a cappella version by The Flying Pickets was even more successful than the 1982 original on the UK Singles Chart, being released towards the end of the following year and becoming the Christmas Number One in 1983. It spent five weeks at the top. This made ‘Only You’ the first a cappella chart-topper in the UK.

Next for a new one on me, Spanish heart-throb recording a Spanish version of ‘Only You’. Prepare yourselves…

There are probably many other cover versions of this song but let’s finish with the version by Pop Princess Kylie Minogue. She recorded a version of ‘Only You’ for her ‘Kylie Christmas’ album and dueted with James Corden (yes he really can sing!).

What do you think? Do you prefer the original or one of the cover versions?
