Thirty years ago: UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 8th January 1989

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 2nd to Saturday 7th January 1989.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were eleven new entry’s, eleven climbers and four non-movers. And it was announced like this…

40. Adeva – “Respect”
We begin with a new entry from this New York singer with her version of Aretha Franklin’s 1967 classic, and getting her first UK chart hit.

39. Royal House – “Yeah Buddy”
Another new entry and this time a return to the top 40 for this collective with the follow up to their October hit “Can You Party?”

38. Robert Howard and Kym Mazelle – “Wait”
And another new entry sees The Blow Monkey’s ‘Dr.’ Robert team up with US singer Kym, who gets her first UK top 40 hit as well!

37. Bomb The Bass feat. Maureen – “Say A Little Prayer”
Tim and Maureen fall thirteen places this week, and with eight weeks now on the top 40, it’s looking like this will be their last.

36. Inxs – “Need You Tonight”
Also falling down the chart this week is the group from New South Wales, a total of fourteen places but a tenth week in the top 40!

35. U2 – “Angel Of Harlem”
And the boys from Dublin join in the decent, this week dropping seventeen places and their fifth week overall.

34. Natalie Cole – “I Live For Your Love”
But look at this, Natalie goes back up to where she was two weeks ago! From 40 to 34, back to 40 last week and back up again six places this week! What will possibly happen next week…?(!)

33. The Darling Buds – “Hit The Ground”
A new entry now and a UK top 40 debut for this band from South Wales with their fifth single release but the first to make the chart!

32. Milli Vanilli – “Baby Don’t Forget My Number”
And Rob and Fab are back! They get a new entry with their second single, the follow up to “Girl You Know It’s True”, which made No.3 back in late October/early November.

31. Roachford – “Cuddly Toy”
And another of this weeks numerous new entry’s sees yet another UK chart debut for Andrew Roachford and his band with their second single from their debut, self-titled album.

30. Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock – “Get On The Dance Floor”
Another new entry and another chart return for this pair who last saw UK top 40 action back in August with “It Takes Two”.

29. The Cookie Crew – “Born This Way”
As do these two girls who get a new entry with their first top 40 hit of their own accord. Susie and Debbie of course provided vocals on Tim (No.37) Simenon’s March 1988 hit “Rok Da House”.

28. New Order – “Fine Time”
Bernard and the band fall nine this week with the first track from their new album that’s titled “Technique” and it’s out in just three weeks time!

27. Tiffany – “Radio Romance”
And Tiffany is back where she was two weeks ago too, falling as she does seven places after nine weeks on the chart.

26. Londonbeat – “9am”
And Londonbeat drop five places this week on their slow decent from No.19 where they peaked with this song three weeks ago.

25. Petula Clark – “Downtown ’88”
And Petula falls twelve places this week and out of the top twenty having peaked at No.10 three weeks ago.

24. Roy Orbison – “You Got It”
A big new entry and a return to the UK chart of his own accord now for Roy who sadly died last month, but not before he finished work on his latest album that’s coming out next month.

23. Rick Astley – “Take Me To Your Heart”
Rick gets an eighth week on the top 40 but falls nine places this week with the second single from his second album “Hold Me In Your Arms”.

22. Climie Fisher – “Love Like A River”
And one of last week’s three new entry’s gets a big boost of fifteen places this week for Simon and Rob and back into the top thirty for the first time since last July.

21. Bros – “Cat Among The Pigeons”
But Matt, Luke and Craig are going in the opposite direction, falling eleven places this week and out of the top ten.

20. Michael Jackson – “Smooth Criminal”
And it’s the same for MJ who falls eight this week but remains in the top twenty for his eighth week!

19. Gene Pitney and Marc Almond – “Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart”
A big new entry this week and a return for Gene with his 1967 UK No.5 hit, this time teaming up with Marc Almond. Can they better that twenty two years later…?

18. Cliff Richard – “Mistletoe And Wine”
The trees are down and so is Christmas number one Cliff, who falls thirteen places this week and out of the top ten.

17. Mike and The Mechanics – “The Living Years”
And this weeks highest new entry of them all is a welcome return of the band fronted by former Genesis founder Mike Rutherford, with their first top 40 chart entry since “Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)” back in 1985.

16. Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine – “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”
And its been a very good week for Gloria and the gang who go up twelve places this week and into the top twenty, where she was last to be found seven weeks ago!

15. Phil Collins – “Two Hearts”
And Phil pops down just four places this week with his second single from the ‘Buster‘ soundtrack and his eighth week in total on the chart.

14. Freiheit – “Keeping The Dream Alive”
But going back up the chart this week is the group from Munich who initially peaked at No.15 two weeks ago but fell back one place last week.

13. a-ha – “You Are The One”
But five weeks on and Morton, Mags and Pal continue to ascend the chart, up two places this week and one behind their last hit “Touchy” which made No.12 in early September.

12. Boy Meets Girl – “Waiting For A Star To Fall”
And its an excellent week for George and Shannon after a climb of eight places last week, they rocket up NINETEEN places this week with a tracks that’s already top five in America!

11. Status Quo – “Burning Bridges (On And Off And On Again)”
And falling three places this week and out of the top ten is Francis, Rick, Andy, John and Jeff who are Status Quo.

10. Will To Power – “Freebird/Baby I Love Your Way”
Boy Meets Girl got a big climb this week but no where near as massive as this weeks highest climber, Will To Power go up a whopping TWENTY NINE places this week and into the top ten with their two cover versions brought together.

9. Duran Duran – “All She Wants Is”
And last weeks highest new entry is up sixteen places this week for Simon, John and Nick who get their first UK top ten hit since “Notorious” in October 1986.

8. Fine Young Cannibals – “She Drives Me Crazy”
And last weeks other new entry is up a not-quite-so-whopping TWENTY ONE places for Roland and the band who get their first UK top ten hit since “Ever Fallen In Love?” in January 1986!

7. The Four Tops – “Loco In Acapulco”
A non mover this week for The Four Tops with the second ‘Buster‘ tune on the chart but staying in the top ten for a third week.

6. Kim Wilde – “Four Letter Word”
And Kim has yet another good week, climbing three places this week after six weeks in total in the top 40 with her third consecutive top ten hit in six months!

5. Angry Anderson – “Suddenly”
The Neighbours wedding theme is still going strong, falling two places this week but getting a sixth week in total in the top five!

4. Inner City – “Good Life”
Another non mover this week is Kevin and Paris with the follow up to last Autumn’s big dance tune “Big Fun”, this track gets a second week at the top of the dance chart too.

3. Neneh Cherry – “Buffalo Stance”
And Neneh is also still climbing, up three places this week and into the top three with her debut single. Look out for her debut album that’s due this Spring!

2. Erasure – “Crackers International” EP
And Andy and Vince get a non-mover this week, a second week for them with their EP of new tracks lead by “Stop”.

1. Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan – “Especially For You”
Which means Kylie and Jason get a second week on top with their duet now in its sixth week on the chart and never straying out of the top two. Can they get a third?…there’s only one way to find out…!
