Thirty years ago: UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 19th November 1989

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 13th to Saturday 18th November 1989.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were eight new entry’s, ten climbers and one non-mover! And it was announced like this…
40. Billy Joel – “We Didn’t Start The Fire”
Billy falls nineteen places this week with the first single to come from his current album “Storm Front”.
39. The Alarm – “New South Wales”
After two weeks on the chart and two weeks in the same position, The Alarm fall eight places but remain inside the top 40. Just.
38. De La Soul – “Eye Know”
Down too for De La Soul, sixteen for them, with their biggest UK chart hit yet.
37. Tears For Fears featuring Oleta Adams – “Woman In Chains”
Kurt and Roland are back with the second single from “The Seeds Of Love” album, their new entry is with American singer Oleta Adams, who wins her first UK top 40 showing as a result.
36. Technotronic – “Pump Up The Jam”
Technotronic fall ten this week having been on the chart since August and they have new songs already ‘in the bag’ with a follow up coming soon!
35. Cher – “If I Could Turn Back Time”
Cher is down sixteen this week with her big UK chart comeback from her current album “Heart Of Stone” and you can expect another track from that album very soon.
34. Gloria Estefan – “Get On Your Feet”
Gloria Estefan is back with yet another new entry from her number one album “Cuts Both Ways”, just three weeks after she left us with “Oye Mi Canto”.
33. Janet Jackson – “Rhythm Nation”
But down goes Janet Jackson, ten places, with the second single from her current album of the same name.
32. Chris Rea – “The Road To Hell”
Chris is down fifteen with his biggest UK chart hit yet, the album of the same name remains at No.1 on the album chart for a third week!
31. Prince and Sheena Easton – “The Arms Of Orion”
Prince and Sheena were new last week and climb four places with the third single to come from the ‘Batman’ film soundtrack.
30. The Happy Mondays – “Madchester Rave On” EP
There a new entry for The Happy Mondays, a UK group that’s been recording since 1980 but now, nine years on, they score their first top 40 entry. The song “Hallelujah” features the vocals of Kirsty MacColl.
29. Bobby Brown – “Roni”
Bobby’s back with his SIXTH, yes, 6th single release this year from his album “Don’t Be Cruel” and with this new entry, “Roni” follows all five others that come from that album!
28. The Eurythmics – “Don’t Ask Me Why”
Annie and Dave are down three this week, however, after just one week’s progress with their second chart hit of this year.
27. Big Fun – “Can’t Shake The Feeling”
Jason, Mark and Phil are back! Big Fun get a new entry with the follow up to their Summer smash “Blame It On The Boogie”, thanks once again to those hitmakers Stock, Aitken and Waterman!
26. Blackbox – “Ride On Time”
The former number one from Blackbox is down eight this week and out of the top twenty for the first time since mid-August!
25. Deborah Harry – “I Want That Man”
Following them is Debbie Harry, who also exits the top twenty as she goes down nine places with the lead single from her latest album “Def, Dumb And Blonde”.
24. Jeff Wayne – “Eve Of The War”
Jeff Wayne is back in the UK chart eleven years after the release of his hugely successful “War Of The Worlds” soundtrack from 1978, thanks to a remix of the lead track from producer Ben Liebrand.
23. Belinda Carlisle – “Leave A Light On”
Belinda Carlisle falls nine this week and out of the top twenty with the lead single from “Runaway Horses“, which leaves the album chart top ten and falls to No.14.
22. Luther Vandross – “Never Too Much ’89”
Also falling this week is Luther, eight places for his with the remix of his 1981 chart debut.
21. Fine Young Cannibals – “I’m Not The Man I Used To Be”
Going the other way is FYC with their fourth top 40 hit of this year, up thirteen places this week and doing better than its predecessor “Don’t Look Back”, which didn’t quite make it into the top thirty this Summer.
20. Jimmy Somerville and June Miles-Kingston – “Comment te dire adieu”
Jimmy and June made their debut un-Communarded last week on the chart and get a big boost of thirteen places this week into the top twenty!
19. Living In A Box – “Room In Your Heart”
It’s now their biggest selling single, but Living In A Box go down eight places this week, their seventh week inside the top twenty.
18. Morrissey – “Ouija Board, Ouija Board”
Morrissey is back with a new entry and his third single of this year, the follow up to “Interesting Drug” and “The Last Of The Famous International Playboys”.
17. Inner City – “What’cha Gonna Do With My Lovin’?”
Paris and Kevin got their fifth top 40 entry last week with this song and go up eleven places this week and back into the top twenty for the third time this year.
16. Double Trouble and The Rebel MC – “Streets Tuff”
Down six this week for Double Trouble and their mate The Rebel MC with their biggest UK chart hit yet, the follow up to “Just Keep Rockin'”, their debut hit back in June.
15. D-Mob featuring Cathy Dennis – “C’mon Get My Love”
Going nowhere this week are D-Mob and Cathy Dennis, sitting pretty for a second week with Danny’s third chart hit and Cathy’s first.
14. Jive Bunny – “That’s What I Like”
Going down six this week is the former number one from Jive Bunny, ‘his’ second of 1989, one of only three acts that have achieved multiple chart topping singles this year.
13. The Stone Roses – “Fools Gold”
This week’s highest new entry is from The Stone Roses, who made their chart debut back in July with “She Bangs The Drums”. It’s the third single to come from their self-titled debut album that was released in April which, as yet, has failed to chart. That could all change now…
12. 808 State – “Pacific State”
One of last weeks high new entry’s was from 808 State, who made their chart debut, this week they climb eight places with it and also enter the top five on the dance chart.
11. Kaoma – “Lambada”
Kaoma are tempting us all with the “Lambada” and it’s working, they get another big climb, this week of sixteen places to sit just outside the top ten. The song has already been a number one in over a dozen countries worldwide, can they add another one to that list?
10. The Mixmaster – “Grand Piano”
Falling one place this week is The Mixmaster aka Gino Latino, but he stays inside the top ten for a second week.
9. Martika – “I Feel The Earth Move”
And after two weeks as a non-mover, Martika is down two places with her second UK top ten hit of this year.
8. Milli Vanilli – “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You”
Rob and Fab go down three this week with their biggest UK chart hit so far, it’s their seventh week inside the top ten as well!
7. UB40 – “Homely Girl”
UB40 made their return to the chart last week and in ascending seventeen places, they ‘claim’ this week’s highest climber!
6. Iron Maiden – “Infinite Dreams”
Last week’s highest new entry, meanwhile, was from Iron Maiden, who move up six places to win their fifth UK top ten hit and is taken from a live album entitled “Maiden England”.
5. Kylie Minogue – “Never Too Late”
Kylie is sadly down one this week with the third single to come from “Enjoy Yourself“, which remains at No.2 on the album chart, its sixth week in the top three since it was released.
4. Phil Collins – “Another Day In Paradise”
Following Kylie is Phil, he’s down two with the first single to come from his new album “…But Seriously”, which is out in two weeks time.
3. Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville – “Don’t Know Much”
Linda and Aaron continue to progress nearer the top as they move up three this week, the song is currently sitting at No.2 on the US singles chart.
2. Lisa Stansfield – “All Around The World”
But after two weeks on top, Lisa Stansfield falls one place this week, her debut album “Affection” is, however, out tomorrow.
1. New Kids On The Block – “You Got It (The Right Stuff)”
And so last week’s highest climber from New Kids On The Block, replaces Lisa by a two place leap and gives the boy band their first UK chart topper, having already notched up three across the Atlantic. Will they be allowed a second, or will Linda and Aaron or someone else deprive them of that? There’s only one way to find out…
