Thirty years ago: UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 29th January 1989
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 23rd to Saturday 28th January 1989.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were seven new entry’s, sixteen climbers and three non-movers. And it was announced like this…
40. Freiheit – “Keeping The Dream Alive”
We kick off with the band from Munich falling sixteen places this week after seven weeks in total on the top 40.
39. Big Country – “Peace In Our Time”
The boys from Dunfermline get a new entry with the title track of their fourth album released last year and score their eleventh top 40 hit.
38. Debbie Gibson – “Lost In Your Eyes”
Debbie is back too, she gets this new entry with the first track from her forthcoming second album, due in May.
37. Monie Love – “I Can Do This”
There’s a new entry for 19 year old London born Monie aka Simone Johnson with her debut single, hopefully the first of many to come…!
36. Luther Vandross – “She Won’t Talk To Me”
Luther is back with a new entry and the second single from his “Any Love” album, following on from the title track last October that reached No.31.
35. Angry Anderson – “Suddenly”
And Angry falls ten places again this week with the Neighbours Wedding theme that gains an eleventh week on the top 40!
34. The Four Tops – “Loco In Acapulco”
And with nine weeks on the chart, The Four Tops fall twelve this week with their contribution to the film ‘Buster‘.
33. The Stranglers – “Grip ’89”
A new entry last week and climbing two places this week for The Stranglers with this re-working of their 1977 debut.
32. The Waterboys – “Fisherman’s Blues”
And another new entry from last week, this time climbing eight places for The Waterboys with only their second UK top 40 chart hit.
31. Hue And Cry – “Looking For Linda”
Pat and Greg are back for 1989 with the first single from their forthcoming second album and get their first top 40 hit since “Labour Of Love” back in 1987!
30. Kim Wilde – “Four Letter Word”
But after nine weeks, Kim falls twelve places with her fourth single from the album “Close” and out of the top 20, where she’s been for seven of those!
29. Samantha Fox – “I Only Wanna Be With You”
A good week for Sam as she goes up ten places this week with her version of Dusty’s 1963 classic, this time produced by Stock Aitken Waterman!
28. Raze – “Break 4 Love”
And Raze continue to climb, up another three places this week and now No.3 on the Dance chart this week!
27. Yazz – “Fine Time”
Yazz is back for 1989 with a new entry and the third single to come from her top three album “Wanted”.
26. Natalie Cole – “I Live For Your Love”
Natalie drops three places this week, but having spent the last seven weeks yoyo-ing up and down, who can say what will happen next week…?
25. Level 42 – “Tracie”
And Mark King and the group from the Isle of Wight also get another boost this week, up another three places!
24. Michael Ball – “Love Changes Everything”
This week’s highest new entry is courtesy of stage performer Michael with this track from Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s new musical ‘Aspects Of Love’.
23. Sheena Easton – “The Lover In Me”
Sheena‘s had a good week, up eleven places from her new entry last week with the title track from her forthcoming eighth studio album!
22. Simply Red – “It’s Only Love”
This week’s highest climber is of sixteen places and belongs to Mick Hucknall who gets his biggest hit since “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye” in the Autumn of 1987.
21. Will Downing and Mica Paris – “Where Is The Love?”
But Will and Mica drop two places this week and out of the top twenty with their version of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway’s 1972 classic.
20. Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock – “Get Up On The Dancefloor”
Falling six places this week is this Rob and DJ E-Z Rock (real name Rodney Bryce) with their biggest UK chart hit so far.
19. Inner City – “Good Life”
And falling seven this week is Kevin and Paris, also with their biggest UK chart his so far.
18. Bobby Brown – “My Prerogative”
Its been another good week for Bobby who climbs nine places and into the top twenty for the first time in his career with his debut solo single.
17. Adeva – “Respect”
And Adeva gets a lift up as well, up four places this week, also with her debut single.
16. Milli Vanilli – “Baby Don’t Forget My Number”
But Rob and Fab can do no better or no worse, they hold on for a second week at number 16 with their second UK top twenty hit.
15. Boy Meets Girl – “Waiting For A Star To Fall”
A former US top 5 hit and UK top 10 hit from the writers of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”, George and Shannon drop four places this week.
14. Brother Beyond – “Be My Twin”
While Nathan, Carl, Steve and David climb one place this week with their third UK chart hit single.
13. Then Jerico – “Big Area”
Last week’s highest new entry climbs eight places this week and into the top twenty for the first time since July 1987 for this band.
12. Neneh Cherry – “Buffalo Stance”
But after five weeks in the top ten, Neneh falls four places and out with her debut single.
11. Will To Power – “Freebird/Baby I Love Your Way”
And falling two places and out of the top ten goes this group with their double cover in one song.
10. Robert Howard and Kym Mazelle – “Wait”
It’s another good week for ‘Dr.’ Robert and Kym who climb three places and into the top ten – the first time for him for two years and the very first time for Kym!
9. Erasure – “Crackers International” EP
Vince and Andy fall three places this week but get a ninth week in the top ten!
8. Ten City – “That’s The Way Love Is”
And last weeks highest climber get another boost of seven places this week and into the top ten for the first time for this trio.
7. Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan – “Especially For You”
The first number one of this year falls four places this week but expect a new single from Jason next month!
6. Fine Young Cannibals – “She Drives Me Crazy”
And after two weeks in the top five at No.5, FYC fall one place this week with the first single from their forthcoming album “The Raw And The Cooked”.
5. Holly Johnson – “Love Train”
Holly’s on the climb still, up five places this week to claim his first top five hit since “Rage Hard” in 1986.
4. Roachford – “Cuddly Toy”
And so is Andrew Roachford who goes up another three places this week with his debut single.
3. Roy Orbison – “You Got It”
Up one place this week for Roy with the first single from his new album “Mystery Girl”, which will sadly be released posthumously.
2. Mike and The Mechanics – “The Living Years”
Meanwhile Mike and his Mechanics hold tight in second place and get a second week at No.2 with their biggest hit yet.
1. Gene Pitney and Marc Almond – “Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart”
So Marc and Gene get a second week on top, and here they are on last weeks Top Of The Pops together. Can they get a third, there’s only one way to find out…!
