Thirty years ago: UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 22nd January 1989
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 16th to Saturday 21st January 1989.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were six new entry’s, seventeen climbers and two non-movers. And it was announced like this…
40. The Waterboys – “Fisherman’s Blues”
We start with a new entry from this Scottish/Irish group with the first single from their upcoming fourth studio album and their first UK top 40 entry for four years!
39. Samantha Fox – “I Only Wanna Be With You”
Sam’s back with her second single from her latest album “I Wanna Have Some Fun” and this time she covers Dusty Springfield’s 1964 top five hit.
38. Simply Red – “It’s Only Love”
And also making a return to the top 40 after an absence of two years is Mick Hucknall and the group with this, the lead single from their forthcoming album “A New Flame”.
37. Gary Moore – “After The War”
After his new entry last week, Gary climbs four places this week with the first single to come from his new album of the same name.
36. The Darling Buds – “Hit The Ground”
But The Darling Buds are going in the other direction, falling seven places this week after just one week of climbing.
35. The Stranglers – “Grip ’89”
And in a week of returns, The Stranglers are back with a new entry and a re-issue of their debut single from back in 1977.
34. Sheena Easton – “The Lover In Me”
And it’s also a welcome return to Sheena Easton with this new entry and her first top 40 hit since “U Got The Look” with Prince back in 1987.
33. The Cookie Crew – “Born This Way”
And The Cookie Crew take a tumble, again after just one week of going up, they go down ten places this week.
32. a-ha – “You Are The One”
And the three boys from Norway drop twelve places this week and out of the top twenty with eight weeks in total on the top 40.
31. New Model Army – “Stupid Questions”
A new entry last week and refusing to move this week, New Model Army stay put for a second week.
30. Raze – “Break 4 Love”
Another of last weeks new entries but this one is on the climb, up seven places and into the top thirty and also now top ten on this week’s dance chart.
29. Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine – “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”
But Gloria, Emilio and their band are dropping eleven places this week and out of the top twenty.
28. Level 42 – “Tracie”
A good week for the band from the Isle of Wight, a new entry last week and up six places this week.
27. Bobby Brown – “My Prerogative”
And also climbing after a new entry last week is Bobby with his debut single, up eleven places and look out for his debut album to be released next month!
26. Duran Duran – “All She Wants Is”
Simon and the boys are falling thirteen places this week and with only four weeks on the chart, possibly their last in the top 40…
25. Angry Anderson – “Suddenly”
And after two months in the upper half of the chart, Angry falls ten this week and out of the top twenty with the Neighbours wedding theme.
24. Freiheit – “Keeping The Dream Alive”
And also dropping out of the top twenty this week is the group from Munich, down eight places in total.
23. Natalie Cole – “I Live For Your Love”
But it’s been another great week for Natalie as she climbs seven places, six weeks after entering the top 40!
22. The Four Tops – “Loco In Acapulco”
Falling eight, however, are The Four Tops with their contribution to the ‘Buster‘ film soundtrack and out fo the top twenty.
21. Then Jerico – “Big Area”
Our highest new entry this week is another welcome return to the chart for the band from London with the first release from their forthcoming second album “The Big Area”.
20. Adeva – “Respect”
We start the twenty with a climb of four places for Adeva and into the UK top twenty with her debut single release.
19. Will Downing and Mica Paris – “Where Is The Love?”
A new entry last week and up nine places this week for Will and Mica with her second top twenty hit of her career so far.
18. Kim Wilde – “Four Letter Word”
All the six’s for Kim as she gets a sixth week in the top 20 but she down six places with her third consecutive top ten hit in six months!
17. Ten City – “That’s The Way Love Is”
This week’s highest climber is up sixteen places and into the top twenty for the second time for this foursome from the US.
16. Milli Vanilli – “Baby Don’t Forget My Number”
Rob and Fab are also climbing, up three places this week with their second UK top twenty so far…
15. Brother Beyond – “Be My Twin”
And also climbing, this time fifteen places and into the top twenty for the third time in their chart career are Brother Beyond.
14. Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock – “Get On The Dance Floor”
And Rob and DJ E-Z Rock are also ascending the chart, up another three places this week with their second UK top 40 hit.
13. Robert Howard and Kym Mazelle – “Wait”
Another good week for ‘Dr.’ Robert and Kym, they go up nine places from last week’s climb of sixteen and into the top twenty!
12. Inner City – “Good Life”
But after six weeks, Kevin and Paris drop four places and out of the top ten altogether with their Christmas dance chart topper.
11. Boy Meets Girl – “Waiting For A Star To Fall”
And sadly George and Shannon fall two places this week and also out of the top ten with the theme from the film ‘Three Men And A Little Lady’.
10. Holly Johnson – “Love Train”
Last week’s highest new entry is up eleven places this week and into the top ten for the first time as a solo artist for Holly.
9. Will To Power – “Freebird/Baby I Love Your Way”
But down three places go Will To Power with their double cover version single having climbed thirty three places from their chart entry four weeks ago.
8. Neneh Cherry – “Buffalo Stance”
Down goes Neneh too, five places this week after spending two weeks in third place, but expect her debut album this Spring!
7. Roachford – “Cuddly Toy”
Last week’s highest climber continues to rise, up a further four places this week and into the top ten for Andrew Roachford and his group.
6. Erasure – “Crackers International” EP
And having spent three weeks in second place, Vince and Andy fall four this week with their biggest seller thus far.
5. Fine Young Cannibals – “She Drives Me Crazy”
A non-mover for Roland and the boys, however, they get a second week in the top five but moving no further up or down.
4. Roy Orbison – “You Got It”
Another good week for Roy though, he’s up another three places and into the UK top five for the first time in twenty three years!
3. Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan – “Especially For You”
And last week’s number one is down two places and out of the top two for the first time ever for Kylie and Jason having spent four of them at No.2 and three on top.
2. Mike and The Mechanics – “The Living Years”
Another good week for Mike Rutherford and his group, up two this week to claim their biggest hit yet in the UK and also in the US where it has entered the top ten!
1. Gene Pitney and Marc Almond – “Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart”
So a climb of nine places this week takes Gene and Marc to the top spot, four places more than Gene’s 1967 original and gives Marc his first solo UK chart topper but his second overall since “Tainted Love” with Soft Cell in 1981!
