Thirty years ago: UK top 40 singles chart for Sunday 1st January 1989

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 26th to midnight on Saturday 31st December 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were four new entry’s, one re-entry, nineteen climbers and one non-mover. And it was announced like this…
40. Natalie Cole – “I Live For Your Love”
Down six places this week for Natalie after just one week of moving up, with the fourth single from her album “Everlasting”.
39. Will To Power – “Freebird/Baby I Love Your Way”
First new entry of 1989 see this US duo get their first UK chart hit with their version of Peter Frampton’s 1976 “Baby” and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s 1975 “Freebird”.
38. Stakka – “Stakka Humanoid”
Non mover this week for Stakka, now in its seventh week on the top 40.
37. Climie Fisher – “Love Like A River”
Another new entry and a welcome return of Simon and Rob with the first taste of their forthcoming second studio album, the follow up to the hugely successful “Everything”.
36. Shakin’ Stevens – “True Love”
Not a good week for Shakey, and maybe the Christmas cheer has worn off by now, he’s down thirteen places this week.
35. Annie Lennox and Al Green – “Put A Little Love In Your Heart”
And Annie and Al drop seven places this week with their track from a Christmas hit movie that too is falling down the film chart this week.
34. Yazz – “Stand Up For Your Love Rights”
A re-entry for Yazz now after a three week absence, she’s back for a ninth week all told with her first solo single of her career so far.
33. Bon Jovi – “Born To Be My Baby”
Jon and the boys from New Jersey fall four places this week with the second single from their latest album…”New Jersey”!
32. Enya – “Evening Falls”
And after such a big climb last week, Enya drops twelve places this week and out of the top thirty.
31. Boy Meets Girl – “Waiting For A Star To Fall”
The only new entry from last week is up eight places this week. This song is from the latest installment of ‘Three Men And A…Baby’ this time!
30. Hithouse – “Jack To The Sound Of The Underground”
And after dropping away gracefully, this former dance chart topper goes back up six places this week!
29. Fine Young Cannibals – “She Drives Me Crazy”
Another new entry and another welcome return to the UK top 40 for FYC with their brand new single and their first UK top 40 appearance for two years.
28. Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine – “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”
Another good week for Gloria, she’s up a further four places and into the top thirty or the third time in four months!
27. Pet Shop Boys – “Left To My Own Devices”
And in an oddball week, Neil and Chris go back up the chart six places this week after peaking at No.4 five weeks ago.
26. Tribe Of Toffs – “John Kettley Is A Weatherman”
Last week’s highest climber is down five places this week for the boys from Sunderland with their first UK top 40 hit.
25. Duran Duran – “All She Wants Is”
This weeks highest new entry is the second single from DD’s latest album “Big Thing” that was released in September.
24. Bomb The Bass feat. Maureen – “Say A Little Prayer”
And another song that boomerang’s this week, Tim and Maureen go back up two places this week and get a seventh week in the top 30.
23. Bananarama – “Nathan Jones”
And so do Sara, Keren and Jacqui, they go back up one place this week with the second track from their “Greatest Hits Collection“.
22. Inxs – “Need You Tonight”
…as do INXS as well! They climb back three places after spending the past two weeks on hold at No.25!
21. Londonbeat – “9am”
Sadly not the same for Londonbeat, they fall two places from a four week climb and fall out of the top twenty altogether.
20. Tiffany – “Radio Romance”
It’s a good week for Tiffany, she goes back up seven places this week and gets her first top 20 hit of a new year!
19. New Order – “Fine Time”
But New Order go in the opposite direction, down two this week. Look out for their new album expected later this month!
18. Robin Beck – “The First Time”
And former number one Robin also yo-yo’s back up the chart, a four place re-climb this week for her!
17. U2 – “Angel of Harlem”
But Bono and the boys from Ireland head the other way, dropping five this week.
16. Freiheit – “Keeping The Dream Alive”
A fall of one place this week for this German band after just two weeks, one in, one up.
15. a-ha – “You Are The One”
Moreton, Mags and Pal continue to climb the chart, however, four weeks on and they pop up another three places.
14. Rick Astley – “Take Me To Your Heart”
And Rick can also celebrate as he re-climbs the chart by two places this week.
13. Petula Clark – “Downtown ’88”
Petula slips two this week with this remix of her 1965 hit, courtesy of non other that the man at No.30 no less!
12. Michael Jackson – “Smooth Criminal”
And Michael can also join the big group of people this week going back up the chart, he steps up one place higher than last week.
11. Phil Collins – “Two Hearts”
But Phil slips one place and out of the top ten after five weeks spent in total. And rumour has it that he is recording a new studio album to be released later this year!
10. Bros – “Cat Among The Pigeons”
We start the top ten with Bros slipping ANOTHER two places, but getting a fifth week overall.
9. Kim Wilde – “Four Letter Word”
And Kim keeps on climbing, five places this week and gets her third consecutive top ten hit in a row, all from her hit album “Close“!
8. Status Quo – “Burning Bridges (On And Off And On Again)”
Down three places for The Quo this week after four weeks of intense climbing from No.34 and into the top five last week.
7. The Four Tops – “Loco In Acapulco”
The other ‘Buster‘ soundtrack song, however, remains in the top ten and goes up two places this week for The Four Tops.
6. Neneh Cherry – “Buffalo Stance”
Neneh continues her ascent of the top ten with a climb of one place this week with her debut solo single.
5. Cliff Richard – “Mistletoe And Wine”
AND…last weeks number one falls four places this week, Christmas number one Cliff is no more, after four weeks on top. Oh and factfinders, this is actually his 99th UK single release!
4. Inner City – “Good Life”
After a fall of one place last week, Kevin Saunderson and Paris Grey go back up the chart two places this week and out peak their own previous high of No.5 two weeks ago!
3. Angry Anderson – “Suddenly”
And Angry Anderson also gets a lift back up the chart this week, having spent two weeks at No.4, he’s back up to where he was three weeks ago with the Neighbours wedding theme.
2. Erasure – “Crackers International EP”
And Vince and Andy are up one place too this week and get their highest UK singles chart hit since “Sometimes” back in January 1986!
1. Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan – “Especially For You”
So, after FOUR weeks being kept off the top by Cliff, Kylie and Jason finally make a move, up one place and claim the first number one of 1989! Incidentally, this becomes Kylie’s second UK chart topper and Jason’s first.
