MARKX has been put forward for playlisting by BBC Radio 2!

Singer and great friend of talkaboutpopmusic.com MARKX has been put forward for playlisting and spot plays on BBC Radio 2. The news follows “Other Side Of The River” being selected as BBC Sussex & Surrey’s Track Of The Day in April.

MARKX tells us “Two big major developments came in such quick succession! Sometimes you can be hustling away for months and then all of a sudden – a breakthrough! It’s exciting and truly terrifying at the same time! It makes a huge difference having people championing you at the other end!”.

BBC Sussex/ Surrey presenter, Sarah Gorrell, has since been in contact to say she loved the track and will play the songs again. MARKX says of this “It’s both wonderfully exciting and truly terrifying! Obviously you never get over the fear of rejection, you just learn to have a different relationship with it! It’s a sensitive subject having had my confidence knocked by people I had looked up to in the business. It really does mean something though when you have the head of BBC Radio 2/ 6 Music in your corner and presenters taking the time to drop you an email”.

Following the release of the final element EP “Fire” in May, the project will be concluded with an album featuring all the tracks. MARKX adds: “It’s another opportunity to promote the key songs in the collection whilst the next project is recorded. The next thing is to take my songs out on the road. I’m painfully aware with promoting the tracks I’ve ended up a keyboard warrior! When I set myself the outrageous goal to release 4 EPs over 8 months it was always going to be tight in terms of time. For me it has all been about gaining momentum after a long break as an artist”.

In terms of plans for the future, MARKX tell us “The “Elements” album will be followed by a collection of brand new material. I’m mixing it up and using a crowdfunding style campaign for this next one. It will be organic instruments and a folk pop sound. I had the luxury of assembling a brand new team of writers for this one. I’d planned to spend the summer writing for the next project. As it happened the songs ended up being written by spring so I’m raring to go in and record!”.

MARKX has also been working with fellow singer/songwriter (and friend of talkaboutpopmusic.com), Sam Dickinson, on new material! He adds: “Sam has been a joy to work with. The track is we’ve written for him is really special, it really does have legs. It’s nice to mix it up and work with other artists. The whole industry model has changed significantly and you have to evolve and change to survive the most competitive industry on the planet. That means diversifying your writing to stay relevant”.

The first 3 EP’s “Water“, “Air” and “Earth” are all available in all major digital stores with “Fire” scheduled for release in late May.

We wish MARKX all the best and of course, will be following his development with great interest in the future.

So perhaps you’ve read an article or two that I’ve written and wondered “just who is this character?”! Well I thought maybe it would be time to introduce myself and what I’m all about. Well it’s all about the music! Having been born in the late 1970’s I was heavily influenced by my parent’s love of ‘popular’ music and rock and roll of the 1950’s and 60’s. My Mother always said she should of married Elvis and my father was, and is still, in love with Sandie Shaw! But while my Dad’s tastes stopped in about 1967, my Mum carried on loving music throughout the 70’s, 80’s and beyond. My first memory was playing on the floor whilst my Mother was ironing one day with the radio on, and hearing ABBA’s “Super Trouper” dancing my nappy off to it! Maybe that’s where it all went wrong…?! Having been subjected to all and sundry in my infant years, I finally found my feet in the mid-1980’s and began ‘partying’ to the likes of Culture Club, Stevie Wonder(!), Elkie Brooks and Bananarama to name but a few! The year 1987 would have a profound effect on my listening tastes and from thereon in my life would be dominated with buying and listening to music. Any number of outstanding songs were released and listened to that year, most notably “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “La Isla Bonita”. That Summer my mind was completely taken over with music and sounds I’d never heard before and I was totally taken in by it all. My father would say “whaaar rubbish you got on naaaaao?” (I’m from Norfolk!) but I was hooked. And it continued so for the rest of the decade and the next. At the beginning of 1988 I ‘met’ my true love and the singer I’ve worshipped more than any other artist or group. You may know of her. She’s from Australia…! Aside from pop music, my tastes are many and varied and continues to grow and expand as I ‘mature’ in age. I’ve always been heavily interested in films and in particular the mechanics of film making and of course film music, so scores and subsequently orchestral music takes up a lot of my tastes and collection. 90’s dance and club tunes also takes up much of the space in my head and I’m surprised my brain has stopped shaking from the years of abuse it took being dragged to nightclubs, often three times a week in my 20’s! I find with each year that passes I regress back to my youth and of course the 1980’s. 80’s music dominates and the lust to see as many 80’s acts and singers play live now is insatiable. I’m still getting into the groove as much as every breath I take, but I’m never gonna give up listening to my heart and pumping up the volume, simply because I LOVE MUSIC…any kind of music!
