EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘When’ – The Kalin Twins

What was the number one song in the UK on 22nd August 1958?

By Hayley Beasley Dye

American twins, The Kalin Twins were at number one for 5 weeks with When.

This is quite fun! When it first started, I thought it was just going to be complete dross, but as the song continued, it grew on me. I think I might have it stuck in my head for the rest of the day now, especially the repetitive clicky bits that thread through the whole song. A song that is the epitome of 1950s popular rock.

Lyrics

“When, when you smile, when you smile at me
Well, well I know our love will always be
When, when you kiss, when you kiss me right
I, I don’t want to ever say good night
I need you
I want you near me
I love you
Yes, I do and I hope you hear me
When, when I say, when I say “Be mine”
If, if you will I know all will be fine
When will you be mine?
When, when you smile, when you smile at me
Well, well I know our love will always be
When, when you kiss, when you kiss me right
I, I don’t want to ever say good night
I need you
I want you near me
I love you
Yes, I do and I hope you hear me
When, when I say, when I say “Be mine”
If, if you will I know all will be fine
When will you be mine?
When will you be mine?”
