EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘I Got Stung/One Night’ – Elvis Presley

What was the number one song in the UK on 30th January 1959?

By Hayley Beasley Dye

Here he is again, good ole Elvis. This time he’s at number one with a double A side I Got Stung/One Night, where he remained for 3 weeks.

I Got Stung:

Apart from the title of the song, I really struggle to understand a word that Elvis sings in this song. The singing is a kind of a rattling mumble throughout it. However, as it’s Elvis- it doesn’t really matter. You get the idea. This song has a great pace and beat to it. I imagine this was a great song to dance to back in the 50s.

One Night:

At times the tune of this reminds me of O Sole Mio (or if you’re of a certain age Just One Cornetto). Which is slightly weird, as It’s Now or Never by Presley was based on O Sole Mio. So, I’ll this about One Night, it’s kind of a rockier, raspier version of It’s Now or Never. And I think I prefer it.

Lyrics

I Got Stung:
“Holy smoke
A land sakes alive
I never thought this could happen to me
Mm, yeah
Mm, yeah
I got stung by a sweet honey bee
Oh, what a feeling come over me
It started in my eyes
Crept up to my head
Flew to my heart
Till I was stung dead
I’m done, uh-uh
I got stung!
Mm, yeah
Mm, yeah
She had all that I wanted and more
And I’ve seen honey bees before
She started buzzin’ in my ear
Buzzin’ in my brain
Got stung all over
But I feel no pain
I’m done, uh-uh
I got stung!
Now, don’t think I’m complainin’
I’m might be pleased we met
‘Cause you give me
One little peck on the back of my neck
And I break out in a cold cold sweat
But if I live to a hundred and two
I won’t let nobody sting me but you
I’ll be buzzin’ ’round your hive, ev’ry day at five
And I’m never gonna leave once I arrive
‘Cause I’m done
Uh-uh, I got stung!
Mm, yeah
Mm, yeah
And I don’t think I’m complainin’
I’m might be pleased we met
‘Cause you give me
One little peck on the back of my neck
And I break out in a cold cold sweat
But if I live to a hundred and two
I won’t let nobody sting me but you
I’ll be buzzin’ ’round your hive, ev’ry day at five
And I’m never gonna leave once I arrive
‘Cause I’m done
Uh-uh, I got stung!
Mm, yeah
Mm, yeah
Mm, yeah
Mm, yeah”

One Night:

“One night with you
Is what I’m now praying for
The things that we two could plan
Would make my dreams come true
Just call my name
And I’ll be right by your side
I want your sweet helping hand
My loves too strong to hide
Always lived, very quiet life
I ain’t never did no wrong
Now I know that life without you
Has been too lonely too long
One night with you
Is what I’m now praying for
The things that we two could plan
Would make my dreams come true
Always lived, very quiet life
I ain’t never did no wrong
Now I know that life without you
Has been too lonely too long
One night with you
Is what I’m now praying for
Of things that we two could plan
Would make my dreams come true”
