What was the number one song in the UK on 15th May 1959?

By Hayley Beasley Dye

Here he is again, good ole Elvis. He was number one for 5 weeks this time, with the double A side A Fool Such As I and I Need Your Love Tonight.

A Fool Such As I: Wow, Elvis’s singing starts so low, I can barely here it. It’s slightly odd. Anyway, his usual singing style soon kicks in. However, I don’t think it’s the strongest Elvis track and find it quite forgettable.

I Need Your Love Tonight: Oh, I’m finding this one quite forgettable too. While, I like some of his stuff, I’m not the biggest Elvis fan, so this might be partly the reason I’m not loving these two tracks. I will say this about this one, it did still get my feet tapping.

Wikipedia

“(Now and Then There’s) A Fool Such as I” is a popular song written by Bill Trader and was published in 1952. Recorded as a single by Hank Snow it peaked at number four on the US country charts early in 1953.

Since the original Snow version, “Fool Such as I”—as the song is sometimes known—has been recorded and released as singles several times, by artists as diverse as Jo Stafford, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, and Baillie & the Boys.

“I Need Your Love Tonight” is a song recorded by Elvis Presley and released as a single written by Sid Wayne and Bix Reichner. It was published by Elvis Presley’s company Gladys Music, Inc. Elvis Presley recorded the song on June 10, 1958, in RCA Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. It was the second of several single releases recorded at a final session conducted just prior to Presley leaving the US for Germany to serve in the United States Army; he would not return to a recording studio until the spring of 1960.

The song reached number four on the Billboard pop singles chart in 1959. Released as a double A-side with “A Fool Such as I”, the song reached No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in May 1959 for five weeks.

Lyrics

A Fool Such As I:

“Now and then, there’s a fool such as I
Pardon me if I’m sentimental when we say goodbye
Don’t be angry with me should I cry
Now when you’re gone, yet I’ll dream a little dream as years go by
Now and then, there’s a fool such as I
Now and then, there’s a fool such as I am over you
You taught me how to love and now
You say that we are through
I’m a fool but I’ll love you dear until the day I die
Now and then, there’s a fool such as I
Now and then, there’s a fool such as I
Now and then, there’s a fool such as I am over you
You taught me how to love and now you say that we are
I’m a fool but I’ll love you dear until the day I die
Now and then, there’s a fool such as I
Now and then, there’s a fool such as I
Now and then, there’s a fool such as I
Now and then, there’s a fool such as I”
I Need Your Love Tonight:
“Oh, oh, I love you so
Uh, uh, can’t let you go
Oh, oh, don’t tell me no
I need your love tonight
Oh, gee, the way you kiss
Sweetie, too good to miss
Wow-wee, want more of this
I need your love tonight
I’ve been waiting just for tonight
To do some lovin’ and hold you tight
Don’t tell me, baby, you gotta go
I got the hi-fi high and the lights down low
Hey, now, hear what I say
Oh, wow, you better stay
Pow, pow, don’t run away
I need your love tonight
I need your love tonight
I need your love tonight
Oh, oh, I love you so
Uh, uh, can’t let you go
Oh, oh, don’t tell me no
I need your love tonight
Oh, gee, the way you kiss
Sweetie, too good to miss
Wow-wee, want more of this
I need your love tonight
I’ve been waiting just for tonight
To do some lovin’ and hold you tight
Don’t tell me, baby, you gotta go
I got the hi-fi high and the lights down low
Hey, now, hear what I say
Oh, wow, you better stay
Pow, pow, don’t run away
I need your love tonight
I need your love tonight
I need your love tonight
Oh, oh, I love you so
I need your love tonight”
