EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Johnny Remember Me’ – John Leyton

What was the number one song in the UK on 31st August 1961?

By Hayley Beasley Dye

English actor and singer, John Leyton was number with Johnny Remember Me for 3 weeks and then again on 28th September for another week.

So, this is apparently a ‘death dittie’ (sounds lovely, doesn’t it?) and these death ditties seemed to popular at the time. It’s about the haunting of a man by his dead lover. It contains eery female vocals singing the song title, but quite frankly it’s a bit naff and the ending is so sudden it makes the song sound half finished.

Lyrics

When the mist’s a-rising
And the rain is falling
And the wind is blowing cold across the moor
I hear the voice of my darlin’
The girl I loved and lost a year ago
Well it’s hard to believe I know
But I hear her singing in the sighing of the wind
Blowin’ in the tree tops way above me
Yes I’ll always remember
Till the day I die
I’ll hear her cry
Johnny remember me
Well some day I guess
I’ll find myself another little girl
To take the place of my true love
But as long as I live I know
I’ll hear her singing in the sighing of the wind
Blowin’ in the tree tops way above me
Yes I’ll always remember
Till the day I die
I’ll hear her cry
Johnny remember me
