EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Michael’ – The Highwayman

What was the number one song in the UK on 12th October 1961?

By Hayley Beasley Dye

American folk band, The Highwayman, was number for 1 week with Michael.

This version of an African-American spiritual song, is the best known recording of it released. It’s all very gentle and quaint and there is something very soothing about it. However, it’s a bit weak and weedy. It could do with a large gospel choir instead, which is definitely not the point of folk music, so I guess this is a polite “no, thank you” from me.

Lyrics

Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah
Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah
Sister help to trim the sail, hallelujah
Sister help to trim the sail, hallelujah
The river is deep and the river is wide, hallelujah
Green pastures on the other side, hallelujah
Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah
Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah
Sister help to trim the sail, hallelujah
Sister help to trim the sail, hallelujah
Jordan’s river is chilly and cold, hallelujah
Chills the body but not the soul, hallelujah
Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah
Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah
Sister help to trim the sail, hallelujah
Sister help to trim the sail, hallelujah
The river is deep and the river is wide, hallelujah
Milk and honey on the other side, hallelujah
Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah
Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah
Sister help to trim the sail, hallelujah
Sister help to trim the sail, hallelujah
