Christmas Number Ones In The Noughties

The Christmas Number One song in UK singles chart has always been a coveted prize for any music artist.

The first Christmas number one of the new millennium was “Can We Fix It?” by Bob the Builder. An annoying novelty song to start of the new era – is this a hint of things to come?

The 2001 Christmas number one was “Somethin’ Stupid” by Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman. A very sweet interpretation of this love song – who knew Nicole Kidman could sing? In fact, who knew Robbie Williams could?

2002 was “Sound Of The Underground” by Girls Aloud. Winners of the reality TV show Popstars: The Rivals – this is, sadly, the start of a new tradition for Christmas number ones.

2003 was “Mad World” by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules. So, if you hate Christmas and want to feel even more depressed about it then this is certainly the song to help with that.

2004 was an updated version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas” by Band Aid 20. I really liked this version – it was a lot more mellow and chilled out than the raw original.

From here on in the winner’s song from the X Factor pretty much has a monopoly over the Christmas charts. This time it is Shayne Ward with “That’s My Goal”. He was destined to be a global mega star and now he has a little acting part in a UK soap opera – go figure.

For 2006 it was the only X Factor winner who has really been a big success – “A Moment Like This” by Leona Lewis. Although she is still making music these days it seems her career is slowly going down the pan too.

2007 it was Leon Jackson with “When You Believe”. Yes, Leon who? Exactly!

In 2008 “Hallelujah” by Alexandra Burke from X Factor took the top. I love this song and can’t cope with her covering it even although she has an amazing voice.

At the end of the decade everyone was getting fed up of Simon Cowell’s X Factor songs so there was a Facebook campaign to get this song to number one. Far from festive! “Killing In The Name” by Rage Against the Machine.

Well, that’s the Noughties all done and we will have to wait a few more years for the next decade to be complete but let’s hope for a real Christmassy sounding song soon.
