EVERY UK NUMBER ONE SONG: ‘Return to Sender’ – Elvis Presley

What was the number one song in the UK on 13th December 1962?

By Hayley Beasley Dye

Elvis was number one for 3 weeks with his 4th number one of 1962- Return to Sender.

I moved house last year and I’m still receiving mail for the previous occupants. Being the diligent civilian that I am, I send each item of mail back and can’t resist writing Return to Sender on the envelope and for the rest of the day I have this Elvis classic stuck in my head. It’s a not bad thing. It’s an undeniably catchy and enjoyable yet simple tune and has and will continue to transcend through generations.

Lyrics

Return to sender, return to sender
I gave a letter to the postman, he put it his sack
Bright in early next morning, he brought my letter back
She wrote upon it
Return to sender, address unknown
No such number, no such zone
We had a quarrel, a lover’s spat
I write I’m sorry but my letter keeps coming back
So then I dropped it in the mailbox and sent it special D
Bright in early next morning it came right back to me
She wrote upon it
Return to sender, address unknown
No such person, no such zone
This time I’m gonna take it myself and put it right in her hand
And if it comes back the very next day then I’ll understand
The writing on it
Return to sender, address unknown
No such number, no such zone
Return to sender, return to sender
Return to sender, return to sender
